I can attest to that! My Kadet Senior suffered pretty good damage to the firewall when one of the weights (attached with screws) tore off in a "minor incident". The nose of my GP Spirit sailplane lost its nose block cleanly in a lawn dart incident, and the instructions SAID you would have to add weight to balance. Lead tends to have a fair bit of inertia and displays it rather well in when the airframe stops abruptly.

I, too, hate adding "non flying weight", but I like tail heavy airplanes even less.
