I agree with you that that is probably more important, he's got _that_ covered I think with all those white LEDs pointing down in the fuselage. On the other hand, every aspect of orientation is important. Personally I like it that even though many particulars change with my night flyers, that there are a few things that are the same for all of them such as the wingtip markers. I didn't do this before but now that I've started doing this religiously I find it is quite helpful with orientation, to the extent that I'm now uncomfortable flying my older night flyers that lack standard markers.
