Hopefully someone else will pipe up with other brand options.
I'm suggesting traxxas as a starter as parts are easy to get and cheaper. Everyone and their dog makes aftermarket parts for most major traxxas cars.
HPI makes some good off roaders, but they have some lemons as well. I don't know enough about them to suggest which ones are good.
