And to think I've been using balloons.

This works well for me on boats and floatplanes. Poke a small hole in the tip of a balloon (one of the long thin ones) and feed it through the exit, now feed your pushrod through the neck and through the hole.

Nyrods work great as well, simply seal the outer shell at the exit and pack the grooves in the inner rod with grease.
