The first time I competed in international competition was in Europe. I was amazed. The Europeans showed up and checked what frequencies were busy. They carried with them a little box of crystals. They would rummage around and select crystals for the lesser used frequencies.

This totally demolished the myth of tuning radios every time a crystal was changed.

In competition in the US we often have to have fly-offs. We change crystals to suit. Now I can be preached to about tuning ad-nauseam. In practice it is a myth.
