I'm in the process of re-learning how to use a metal lathe. Since it involves precise measurements at time and I'm attempting to gear 2 .049 together(thank you Andrew for the help!). I have always been afraid of a micrometer. In high school I would take the zero and move on to the next questions on the test. Well This past weekend I not only got some books from the library but While Dad was up for a visit( nice to have a fahter who is a retired Shop teacher) I dragged his A$$ out the shop and wouldn't let him leave til I was at least somewhat close in reading these things. By the way The family went to bed early tonite so I made most of this time while the info was fresh in my craniuminus, By the way the engine is almost finished, except the drive washer. I'll post pics tommorow.

Curious what throws you about micrometers.Im no machinest but I have two outside and one inside micrometers and use them all the time....

Kevin, to be blunt honest, I'm not sure?.

Maybe just the look of them. Complicated? Not know though, But I'm one happy camper.

Simple,
just go and buya digital readout micrometer and a good 6" vernier caliper with a digital readout. Very reasonable in price now and
Should solve your problems quickly

Third that. The most used and most valuable tool I own is my Mitutoya 6" digital caliper, and my digital micrometer. If you are serious about playing with metal, get at least the caliper as it is the most used. Rarely in model engineering are you working to a greater tolerance than 0.001, and when you are you are usually hand fitting one part to another and not measuring a ten thousandth anyway (but if needed use a mic as the caliper isnt accurate enough).

Lee Valley sells a 6" digital caliper for about $50 C, my Mitutoya costs about $200, but I have used it allmost daily since I bought it in 1993 or 94 ( I was still in college so I know it was pre 95').

Next best is the dial caliper as it is easier (read that FASTER) to read. But, a standered vernier scale is easy to read once you get used to it, but it is NEVER as fast as thge digital.

One very important feature the digital offers that I use and would be lost without, is the ability to center the zero anywhere. Very very usefull....

I second what Andrew says and also I like the idea for converting imperial to metric or back. The other part I do is if I want to be close I will take a couple of measurements to be sure. If you zero between and redo they should be the same.
