sub fin??

I have a giant Sportster which will have a set of floats mounted on it. A friend said it would be advisable to put a sub fin on it. Is there a formula to figure out the size I need.
Thanks Ted

T.L.A.R. is about the closest you can come up with.

However, you don't really need one for the Giant SS..it flies just fine without it...

Also. should directional stability become a problem and if you switch the plane back and forth with wheels, consider just putting fins on the top-rear of the floats. OK, not scale, but neither is the plane. Tex.

That's a good question. I don't like the appearance of a dorsal. A lot of flyers seem to just pass on it.

I've seen guys use thin lexan for a dorsal. It really can't be seen but is quite effective.

An enlarged vertical stab was used on Aeronca Champs and a some Wacos and others.

Sub Fin

I fly a big trainer with floats and don't have a sub fin. I'm also building a Norseman and have no intention of putting a sub fin on it. I think they look funny, especially when used on a scale model that doesn't normally have one.

I'd say 90% of the float flyers in our club don't use them, either.

I don't find that they're neccessary. I do find, however, that I need to use a bit more rudder to make a nice turn.

Sorry, I guess that doesn't really answer your question, does it? 'Just my $0.02 worth.
