My smallest rc plane ever... done and TesT FlowN!

This past weekend I started working on my smallest RC glow powered plane to date. I took a set of drawings for a 1/2A (049) powered ugly stick, and scaled them down 50% to about 22" wingspan. Power is a custom (by me) Cox TD 020, with rc thottle and an aluminum clunk tank for full aerobatics capability.

I am using three Hitec HS55 servos (throttle, elevator and ailerons - rudder will be fixed), a 110mah battery pack, mini switch harness and an Expert micro receiver. I am covering it in tissue, and hopefully all up weight will be 6 to 8 ounces.

Should be a pocket rocket for sure!!

Will get some pics later on...

Anyone else here into 1/2A or smaller stuff (glow)? I have built many 049 planes but never anything this tiny for RC.

I built a 11" span P51 once...had an .020 but it was a freeflight.....It was all engine!!

It did one enormously huge loop before unbuilding itself a couple of inches below ground level........

I had some 020 freeflights too (still have one hanging up over my desk here I built over 20 years ago) and the smallest was a Guillow SE5, that I did up with green tissue. It flew great, and one (its last) flight right into the side of a barn! The engine kept running, even though it broke off the plane, untill it hit the ground.

Untill the last few years, I didnt have the RC gear to actually try this. Now, the micro receivers, servos and such are at a price and reliability that it should be easy.

Ken,
I am well aware of the s.m.a.l.l. fun flies, as they are well written up in FM magazine.... would like to get to one some day

I do have quite a few other 1/2A models, but never did anything rc for an 020 yet. Physically, its so much smaller than ANYTHING I have ever made before! It makes my Whizard I just finished up look HUGE!!

Andrew,
Not sure if it will qualify , but I often use a power pod-ed 049 on my 2m gentle lady. When I was in junior high had a testors p63 King Cobra c/l.
Still have the McCoy 049 (no needle valve though -engine ran great).

the wing is 22" - that is a 6" ruler and a regular pen for scale

Here is the powerplant - a Cox TD that I made an aluminum tank for, with a miniature brass clunk inside for inverted flying. The front plastic housing has also been replaced with my own made aluminum unit. Also, my home made throttle sleeve completes the project. Runs pretty strong!
