Re: looking for a cub

I took a look at that cub and I think its right up your alley.

I realise these days that my building-machine days are over, I still build from time to time, but not like I used to. That is why I love ARF's. In this case, if I were looking for a cubby in the size you mention, I would not hesitate to get this one. 150 bucks for an ARF cubby? You cant beat that!!

Re: looking for a cub

Nice Cub but be careful of shipping cost.
I was looking at a ARF warbird from Tower a few months back about the same size as this Cub and the shipping was about $100 so if you factor in the plane and shipping cost plus our low dollar you might be paying in about the $350 CDN range for it plus any extra cost the courier charges for import fees.
You can buy a Hangar 9 80" Piper Cub ARF at the local hobby shop or Hobby Wholesale with free shipping for about $340.

Re: looking for a cub

Having built a lot of cubs the goldberg or balsa usa are great building and flying cubs.
Either one covered in cloth and painted are a great match for your engine for sure and will be a sweet sounding flyer.

Re: looking for a cub

The Goldberg Cub is not an ARF. It is primarily lite ply and can get quite heavy very quickly, especially with doped fabric covering.

These were generally flown with a strong 2 stroke .60 in the bad old days to achieve decent performance.

In said time, I had a GP 1/5 size more or less ARF Cub which came in need of extensive repair. I made it a clipped wing version since power was only an OS .70 Surpass 4 stroke. Power was adequate. Just over underpowered - long. scale like take off runs, and flight. Definitely not anything exciting. Covering was the newer version of Coverite which was not as good as the earlier stuff prior to the take over by Tower.

The Balsa USA Cub is not appropriate for your engine since it is a 1/4 size model. The build is quite involved and produces a very nice plane. Fabric and dope would work well for the covering.

If you go the Tower route, remember that at present exchange rates, base cost would be over $200 Canadian. If you can't wait to get it when visting the USA, adding in the shipping and all the other charges would indeed bring it to at least $350.

As for finish, if you insist on fabric and dope. you have two options. One is to build and finish it that way. The other is to get an ARF, strip it, recover and paint. ARFs don't come with fabric and dope finishes.
