I may not be a hot doggin's 3D flyer. Actually, just happy doing circles in the sky. But today, I found out the hard way that I can still do an auto when I need to. I was probably only about 3 minutes into my flight with my X-Cell 60 which was running great, good power, nice smoke trail, when out of nowhere, it just flamed out. Ok, one chance at this and a gentle touchdown. I take it back to the pit area, put it on the bench and start with what I thought was the obvious, let's check the glow plug... wait... where is the glow plug... spit it out somewhere. Put in a fresh plug and went flying again.

Re: I can still auto!

I'm impressed and you have a heli in one piece! My version of auto rotate would be more akin to a stone.

Re: I can still auto!

Good on ya! There ain't much time to react in a real, unplanned emergency landing. Quite different than shooting autos on purpose, from your preferred height, from you preferred location relative to the field, etc...

I can do a good 'greased brick' imitation with sufficient planning. Is that worth mentioning?

Re: I can still auto!

Anything that keeps it in one piece and nothing bent or out of align is worth mentioning.

Nice!

Xcells were always good at autos. At least better than some of the other helis in those days.

Re: I can still auto!

Ya, it caught me off guard and I'm sure I paused a bit before dropping the collective, but it set down quite nicely and when it was fully on the skids, did a little 180 degree spin around on the ground, but stayed firm and level. I was actually pretty calm throughout the landing.

Re: I can still auto!

Nice to hear for sure. Haven't flown in a couple months now. Lost interest due to know one to fly with, glad you were able to recover and land it Dave.

Yes they are expensive but once you got the bug you'll be back, make my words.

Re: I can still auto!

I've been flying them about the same amount of time sworn off them several times but they have a challenge like no other. I did have a 600 size but I found it too big and scary tried a 450 but found it too twitchy and a victim of wind. Now I fly a 500 and it's just right for me not too big not too small and the cost is manageable. I'm 61 now and I too am a little long in the tooth but still a teen at heart.

Re: I can still auto!

True enough they're not for everyone. Just like the 3D flying, not for everyone. I don't think my reflexes are there for that.
