One thing thats good and bad, is the fuel tank tray.
It is built into and part of the motor box. The good part is it adds to the motor box strength and stiffness.
The bad is that the tank location is predetermined by the manufacturer. It is also up high in the fuselage.
It also has the fuel tank sitting up higher and up under the hatch.

Re: 3B -- Dalton 35% Extra 260 Build

Well, we are under a heavy storm alert and Tornado watch for the Newmarket area.
So, I guess its time to head down into the shop and do some more work.

Hopefully the lights don't go out aannnddddd........... The roof stays on

At least the new roof isn't being put on the house until saturday LOL. If there is damage tonight, it will get repaired quick enough

i would have hated having just put a new roof on to have a storm remove a bunch of shingles

On my 33% SD Yak ARC it came with 5mm balsa stringers but there were two sections on the bottom of the fuse where they were punched through and broken. No fault of shippin. it had to have been done at the factory during the packing stage as there was nerry a scuff on the box it came in let alone puncture that would have caused that damage but that's another story.

Long of the short of it is I contacted Don's Balsa and he custom cut me 5mm sq spruce stringers. When I had removed all the bals stringers and wieghed them the cut out balsa stringers vs the new spruce stringers going in the wieght penalty was only 1.8oz gain going from balsa to spruce.

The big benifit was the amount of added stregth that spruce provided to the structure. Could p/u the plane by the bottom every time never having to wory about breaking stringers.
Sorry...I'm choking here!!!... You added a whooping 1.8oz on just stringers???

Why do you say it strengthened the fuse??? In what direction?? I'm having trouble understanding how that would add any strength!! Even the big Pitts has balsa stringers!!

Re: 3B -- Dalton 35% Extra 260 Build

Forgot something......

I also have the turtle deck all glued on. Just some finish sanding required to blend into the fuse sides.
I needed to have that done to continue with the hatch and canopy

Huh......... Lost my internet connection while trying to this post.
Should be a fun night

They are all balsa. But they seem to be a hard balsa. They are not soft and seem pretty strong. Not Spruce.... But stronger than light balsa

Nothing wrong with that tank location at all. Mine is up high like that, above the wingtube, and it tracks like an arrow. It balances out when you've got cans running underneath.

Uuuuuuuuuuuuuuummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

You are going to wory about 1.8oz on a 24lb airplane?

The strength was that I could p/u the bottom of the fuse, anywhere and NOT have to wory about hearing cracking noises as I moved it frm the back of my van to the ground. Also you could shrink the snot out of the covering and not break anything.

Hi Tyler,
Good point. I didn't think of that. ACtually, when I went back and looked at it. The back half of the tray is just above the wing tube. Thats where most set their tank anyway. Regardless of airframe.

Re: 3B -- Dalton 35% Extra 260 Build

Last night ended up being rather unproductive.
Just as I got going on the top hatch, the power went out

We were expecting it to. I had a flashlight on the bench top at arms reach just in case.
It was funny. My wife cam into the shop to check on me and there I was trying to work with a flashlight.
She asked if I seriously planned to keep working that way.
I laughed and said no, but I at least had to finish putting the parts together that already had glue on.

So this is it for last night.
The 3 hatch formers are glued to the rails, and the main center stringer of hard balsa is in place.
Hopefully tonight is more productive
