Balsa Sealer?

Remove this ad - become a site supporter!
Years ago (not going to say how many) we used Balsarite to seal the balsa and then make the finially sanding for a nice smooth surface to put iron on covering on.

Of course can't get Balsarite anymore so can someone suggest the next best thing?

thanks
Jim

Re: Balsa Sealer?

nitrate dope, Balsa rite I believe is the same product. i use this on all my builds as a sealer and it also acts like an extra adhesive for the covering.. Having a hard time even finding this lately. last build I was given a product b y Ontario adhesive and it worked perfect. Its also water based so no nasty or harmful fumes... Best of all the loved ones don't get on your case either..

Re: Balsa Sealer?

Dope will not soften when heated. Regular aircraft paint, Stits, Poly Brush, Poly Spray (aluminum undercoat) and the Stits color coat all soften when heated and these plastic finishes will stick to it really good. The problem is that the Stits color and the color on the plastic mix giving a marble pattern. The Poly Spray and the iron on fabric would be a good combination. Then you could paint over it. Balsa-rite is available at our local hobby shop.

Re: Balsa Sealer?

Well our local hobby shop does not carry Balsarite, in fact most places are not selling it at all. It has been bained in Calif.

What was the name of the stuff from Ontario adhesive?

I can forget dope and any form of it, live in a condo, so what ever I use has to not smell like a dope shop.

thanks for the replies

Re: Balsa Sealer?

I think flyrcs is thinking of Eze Kote by Deluxe Materials.

I'm not sure what Ontario Adhesives is doing right now. They are out of stock on most product including Eze Kote.

You might want to try the LHS. My LHS has been bringing in a lot of Deluxe Materials products recently including my favorite Super Phatic glue. I'm sure I could get Eze Kote as well if I asked them to order it in.

To All

I think you could buy Nitrate dope from Aircraft Spruce under the name Randoproof. Its used as a primer coat on ceconite fabric.

Re: Balsa Sealer?

Well could just use thinned out Lacquer clear, its avialble here where I live. Since it is electric was hoping some new wonder product was out that would seal the balsa and allow a nice smooth surface after sanding for the iron on.

Thanks for all the ideas.
