Vehicle to Tow a trailer
So I will be picking up a Pace America 5 x 10 Trailer here shortly. The Ford Windstar has done me well at 435,000 K. Its over 16 years old and has hauled the family and airplanes around pretty well..
What is everyone using to tow the same size trailer around. I am looking for a daily driver to work that's comfortable for a 5 '11 inch person and some what fuel efficient. I have been looking at SUV's and trucks but can't make up my mind. Just thought I would put it out there. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Vehicle to Tow a trailer
Hi Ralph - my trailer is a 5 x 10 Atlas. I haul it behind the Dodge Ram but frankly it would tow behind your Windstar. Now mine is only 6 feet tall, not sure how tall your trailer is. Basically just noting that I don't have any trailer sticking above the cap on the truck so I think that makes a difference with wind resistance especially out on the highway. Taller trailers will catch more wind.
Really a 5 x 10 with plane stuff is not a heavy tow load. I think you can get a wide variety of answers here so more than likely you really need to decide what else you want from the vehicle. Sure, I would not try and tow it with a Smart Car, but a mid size SUV or truck will tow it fairly easily. I would check the towing capacity for the vehicle you are considering and you likely need something that can pull 3000-3500 lbs to give you a safety margin. I think my Ram will tow 7500 but that is twice what you need.

Re: Vehicle to Tow a trailer
If it's another minivan without a towing package just add a tranny cooler.Good luck with your search.

Re: Vehicle to Tow a trailer
I'm pulling a 5X8 with a 2004 GMC Canyon with an inline 5 3.5l and hardly noticed it last weekend all the way to Muncie Indiana and back to Chatham. Pulled a 6x12 to Ottawa last year; to much trail for the truck. I handled it with a tail wind but didn't like the head wind.

Re: Vehicle to Tow a trailer
Nobody else chimed in so I will. Seriously consider diesel. I purchased a 2008 Grand Cherokee this spring and can't believe how much money I am saving on fuel! Nothing like the diesels of old and tows my 6X12 like it is not even there. Even without the trailer I see significant savings.

Old safari or astro van
Many forums on towing advise to find one of them. But if you had one you might not need the trailer. |

That said, if I was looking I would be very interested in the new colorado/canyon with the little 2.8 duramax diesel because I do haul a bigger trailer over longer distances. My Tacoma works great & by the time I'm ready to retire it I'm sure Toyota will also have a small diesel available. |

Re: Vehicle to Tow a trailer
IMHO... for an all around family car WITH TOWING capabilities!...
I believe that you should take a serious look at the Subaru Forester. It has the family / creature comforts as well as the ability to haul some serious payloads! BUT! Be sure to get the RIGHT series... the original Forester was capable of hauling 2000 pounds - then the head office cut the spec on the design (around 2013) to 1000 pounds . After a serious backlash - the 2000 pound Specs were reinstated around 2015 - be sure to check out what year has which Specifications... JMO - FYI
