Stock GP Patriot
I am thinking of building a Great Planes Patriot. Can anyone tell me how this plane performs with just a TT 46 and fixed gear. I never seen one fly. Almost every thread on this plane has the builder obsessed with retracts ,tuned pipes and making it go 150 mph.
Thanks Rich |

Patriot combo
RMadsen...
I am on Patriot #3 now and yes I have it all decked out to go fast, Retracts, left off the inlets, sealed every hinge, ect...ect...But to get back to your question.. My first patriot was completly stock, with a MVVS .40 10x6 prop (which is the same as your .46), 10% nitro, intakes and fixed gear and it still flew fast. But it flew extreemly well, I have never flown a pattern plane but that's how mine flew. It would fly at a respectable speed and do everthing except for the tumbling aerobatics. Knife edge all day long, and the smooth turnaround manovers looked great. Engine out it glides all day, it lands a little faster then a trainer but very smooth. Build it anyway you like it your going to love it. This plane has a wide envelop and you will love it, if not I will take if off your hands. I can't enought of my patriot. |

I just ordered one today but will have to wait because they are back-ordered.I hope it doesn't sound like I'm knocking pipes and retracts , I was just curious what to expect from a stock set-up. I was actually thinking about retracts but I've heard it's hard to get a decent size tank in there.

Rich,
I built one a few years ago and flew it for a couple before it met its demise. It was not the great planes version but probably the same one or close to it. I had an OS40(max) in it with no retracts and it flew very nice. It was not for someone new but if you had a trainer under your belt you could get along with it. It went where it was pointed and I was thinking some time about building another. Just got to get my current projects finished. Also is it a kit or an ARF. Just interested since mine was a kit. The other question was I believe I had an 8oz. tank in it. Let us know how you make out. John

Ya the space for the tank is a little cramped but I usally buy one of those long cylinder type tanks and I have a 10 or 12 oz in mine. I am usally good for about 7-8 min flights (full out) with lots left over for a go around. I run a Mvvs .49. if your going to build it with out retracts you can change where the tank floor goes (just move it down to fit in your favourite tank). Back order eh? I hope GP is not considering putting this back on the shelf again. |
