No RC flying near Vancouver during Olympics

This should be of no great surprise to anyone but if you live within 30 NM of Vancouver airport or 30 NM of Whistler, there will be no RC flying permitted between 29 January and 24 March 2010.

http://www.navcanada.ca/ContentDefin...ver_AIP_EN.pdf

This roughly includes the following areas:

Vancouver, West Vancouver, North Vancouver, Richmond, Coquitlam, Maple Ridge, the whole Sea to Sky highway corridor, Burnaby, Pitt Meadows, Langley, parts of Abbotsford, Blaine (WA), White Rock, a good chunk of the Gulf Islands, parts of Nanaimo, Ladysmith, Chemainus, Squamish, Whistler, Pemberton, ...

As you can imagine the tolerance for such activity will be pretty close to zilch, the RCMP and other local police detachments will be looking out for such activity.

"4. The following operations will be prohibited within CYR185:
• Solo flights by student pilots.
• Aerobatic flights including stalls, spins and steep turns.
• Forced landing and precautionary landing practice.
Unmanned air vehicles and model aircraft operations."

"Designated Altitude: Surface up to but not including 18,000 feet.

Authorizing Agency: Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP)."

"any unauthorized aerial activity within the restricted airspace will be subject to intercept by military aircraft."

See the restricted area in Google Maps:

Re: No RC flying near Vancouver during Olympics

We are facing a similar situation here in southern Ontario this coming summer.
The G8 summit is being held in Huntsville this summer.
With a large number of world leaders flying into Toronto and taveling up the 400 highway approximately 2 hrs north of Toronto.
The proposed no fly zone for about a 2 week period will be pretty much Hamilton to Kingston and the 400 corridore all the way up to North Bay.
That will ground over 100 flying clubs for that 2 to 3 week period.

That might almost be cool to see. To have an F-18 shoot down a .60 size plane over your flying field
I would almost donate the plane to see it happen

I guess that relates more to aircraft capable of carrying people ... but really it shows they aren't jocking around.

I imagine some helicopters may be around as well.

Don't forget the G20 summit being held in Toronto as well. So is the G8 still on, because its still on the web as June 26, 27, and 28th, the same time as the G20?

All we can hope for is terrific weather, to make up for the no fly zones then. Daren

Re: No RC flying near Vancouver during Olympics

just fly your plane above 18000 ft lol sorry seems kindaover the top for precations but they seem to be one edge for reducing any risks
