Re: AT6 Build
Maybe bbair is dead in a ditch somewhere, and the killer is now attempting to pose as him, and take all his planes. Damn, wish I'd thought of doing that! One of our club members, Coyote, has a ton of kits, unbuilt. Pretty sure he's got good life insurance too, so could work a deal out with his wife. Quick trip to the ocean, some rope and cement blocks, I get a ton of kits, she gets the $$$!

Re: AT6 Build
Ahh Wayne … you are so correct…
Here I am recreating my persona after a technical glitch - not of my making – just the world that we live in. I am told that the Administrators are working on the problems, time will tell. As a Noob; I could use a ride to the field and if you have the time could you hook up a buddy box and help me out a bit?? But we are here to chat about; ‘The plane boss - the plane!’ The Wing has now had the top colours added as well as the landing gear and plumbing. Servos will be added later. I just realized that the Landing Gear mechanism was fully exposed and UGLY! So I made up some hatches for them – now they are ‘Less Ugly’ My colour scheme is basic RCAF Trainer with a few minor modifications… Yellow with Red Wing Tips. If you spend enough time on the internet you’ll realize that the AT 6 was around so long that it was flown all over the world in a wide variety of configurations so just about ANY colour scheme can be called ‘Accurate’… somewhere or at some time… Rondels will be locally made as will most of the other markings. My Harvard will not be up to the standards of some of our internet friends – but it will be more than adequate. Once it is proven air worthy… I plan to add a few extras like air scoops etc. We’ll see how it goes. Happy Landings Last edited by bair; 06-28-2016 at 09:21 PM. |

Perhaps the Admins are setting me up so that the killer CAN get access to me easily... What a scheme... all to get at my fleet! (Do you think my wife could have put them up to it to keep the saw dust down in the house?? ) |

Re: AT6 Build
Wives can be vindictive, especially if the R/C Expenditures top things that they think are more important, i.e. mortgage, food, utilities, and shoes.

Re: AT6 Build
OK, Here I go with my next installment of the build!
Currently what I have done is a lot of covering - which makes the bird come to life - or it just looks a lot better in Yellow rather than wood finish... Either way I have been plugging away at it. The Fuse is covered as well as the wing, I have painted the Cowl complete with the Anti-glare patch on the nose - looks pretty good! I also added an 'Anti Skid' walkway on the wings, which will be seen once I attach the wing... (I have a former Harvard pilot giving me advice on such 'Details') The Landing Gear has been installed for a while but the Pneumatic tubing was too short so I had to order up some new ones and install the quick connects etc. Also installed is the Tail Wheel along with the direct control linkage to the rudder - 20 year old technology may not be as pretty as the stuff we have today - but it does work! Still to come - wiring, plumbing, connecting up all of the servo push rods and of course the engine. Canadian Decals are still being made up - but just wait for it! Another oddity that I must make up, is a transportation rack - this plane is a tad too big to just toss in the back of the car so I am planning on making up something to fit into the wing saddle and then allow the Fuse to be strapped to it for transportation... there is always something to be built! Something that is WORTHY OF NOTE is the Centre of Gravity - the plans call for the plane to balance between 3.5" & 4.5" from the Leading Edge - yet I found a thread on RCU that recommended a CG at 5"... is there anyone out there that has had this model and can add a voice to the conversation on the CG? And so it goes...

Re: AT6 Build
Hi Guys;
I am still recovering from my summer events and I thought that I'd show you a couple of items that I HAD to create for my most recent plane, without them finishing the Harvard would be difficult. They are VERY Home Made BUT they didn't cost me anything but my time and they do the job. The first is a 'Cradle' that I use to hold the plane as I work on it and I can also use it to transport the plane around without damaging it. There are a number of tie down points on it to secure the plane to the cradle as well as to hold the cradle in place in my trailer. (I HATE HANGER RASH! ) The second item is a large scale 'Balancing machine' - The machine that I used previously was much prettier but it was only good for planes that were 10 - 12 pounds. My current plane will be in the 15 pound range. Which is why I made up a 'Sturdier' Balance machine. And the project continues...

Re: AT6 Build
Hi Guys;
Just a FYI... I weighed the Harvard today and was both confused and surprised by the findings... The 'Advertised' flying weight is between 10 - 15 pounds - MY model weighed in at 14 pounds 9 ounces! - with Robart Retractable landing Gear. BUT! The plane is NOT balanced for flight... my first effort to balance the plane added some TWO pounds of Weight to the front of the AC! Which now brings the total weight up to some 17 pounds! (or more) This opens up a big conversation on the virtues or retracts as well as the accuracy of the original design. Add to this – I am now considering rebuilding the plane with Flaps to assist with landing – but this could also add some weight!... Now MY Questions are - 'Will it Fly?' (of course it will – the 30cc engine has LOTS of power!) If so - 'How Well?' I am currently looking into ways to balance the plane and keep the weight down – but short of stripping the tail and sanding off a lot of the structure – my options ARE LIMITED! What I AM looking at is a heavy prop nut (brass) and installing a lot of lead in the front of the plane... (I HATE adding weight! ) I already have my two battery packs on the firewall and everything else is as per the design plans... this is the sort of thing that leads you to question the original designers... Details to follow... your comments are always welcome

Re: AT6 Build
Well, I for one am a huge fan of retracts whenever the full size had them.
But! You do have an "out". The North American "Yale". Essentially a Harvard with fixed gear |
