Hi I am in the middle of a project. I like to know where can I get aluminum foil to cover the craft instead of Monokote. I want to have that metallic look. Any idea?

Thanks

Re: Aluminum foil for covering wings

A few years back one of my buddies used the CTC variety of Aluminum Duct Tape to cover Aircraft...

It worked quite well - complete with rivet dimples and panel lines.

Perhaps, you can make it work for you!

bcollydas:

You might also want to consider iron-on covering material. Hobby King sells an iron on silver covering that appears to look quite realistic. As well, Top Flight Monokote comes in aluminum and silver. If the sheen isn't to your liking, you can easily "burnish" the covering material with very fine steel wool.

Re: Aluminum foil for covering wings

Try offset printing press plates if anyone is still using them. They are about .007" thick.

The easiest way to do this is get "Chrome" Monokote (or similar from other manufacturers.)
http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXHV27

The Chrome Monokote looks just like aluminum.

Guys doing scale models using this material would often mask off a square section, then lightly sand it in one direction to get it to dull just a little. When the masking was removed, it looked like a panel of a slightly different colour aluminum as screwed in there. When done in several places, it really made the model stand out.

Re: Aluminum foil for covering wings

Great thread...now what about fiberglass models or models with fiberglass skin, what would be way to metalise them apart from foils or flite metal stuff...

I hear what you are saying Max. The covering sometimes would bubble up and you have to iron it down again.
I found a place that sells the Flite Metal aluminum covering. A bit pricy though. Is real aluminum with adhesive backing.
Joe Gricey used the stuff and it looks great.

Thanks for all your input people. Once I get started on the project I will post my progress..
Cheers

Cool Re: Aluminum foil for covering wings

go back to my build thread in the fixed wing section ( mid october) and check out the finished product. i covered my King Kobra with chrome monocote. it looks fantastic, but is not really practical if you fly a lot. i flew it yesterday and it was blinding on every fly-by. also it just disappears when inverted (literally!) as the covering just reflects the colour of the sky....john
