Re: Switching from nitro to gas planes

Dave, you said any plane from .46 size glow can be powered by gas. The options for smaller gas engines like Saito's small 4 stroke (11cc-15cc) are fairly expensive in comparison to the larger gas 20cc and above. I know Evolution makes smaller gas 2 stroke engines 10cc and up but all the reviews I have read they are not reliable at all and don't last passed a few flights in some cases. Any other option for small gas engine 11-15cc out there? |

Your field box is not going to do much with the gas setup. The smaller gas engines like the 20cc are usually harder to start than the 50cc or bigger engines. Gas engines (when tuned properly) run great, they are reliable, cheap to run and tons of power. I haven't used a nitro engine in almost 10 years. I fly either electric (90% of the time) and gasoline. Cheers, Will

Re: Switching from nitro to gas planes
I've got gas on a Top Flite .60 sized Corsair, propped for a nice mix of power and speed, same engine on a Goldberg Sukhoi, propped for pure vertical, another one (all RCGF 20cc) going onto a Pica 1/5th Waco, fourth on a Top Flite P-40, and another pair will go onto a pair of TF P-51's, (one an RAF Mustang III, the other a P-51B), DLE gasser for Pica 1/5th Spit, CRRC 26 for my Platt 1/5th Me-109, RCGF 60 CC in a Giant Aeromaster, same for my 1/3rd L-4 Grasshopper.
When 4 strokes were the rage, I said no way, sticking to simple. Till I got one. With the newer gassers, I finally took a chance, and never looked back. Trying to sell all but a couple of my nitro birds (well they're the wife's birds!), and go exclusively gas. Far less stuff to haul out to the flight line. |

Re: Switching from nitro to gas planes
Derick, I hate evolution nitro engines, but last year I built a Dehavilland Turbo Otter for a buddy of mine, and he put the Evo 10cc gasser on it. We took it to the field, and treated it, (starting and tuning) just like a 2 stroke, she flashed up instantly, and ran like a top all day, never a burp. Absolutely acted and sounded like a 2 stroke nitro. I have to say, I'm impressed. I haven't checked out any other smaller gassers, but pretty sure we'll see a lot of improvements in them over the next couple of years. Another fellow in our club is building a Goldberg Cub, with the Evo 10cc gasser, so I'll be able to check it out, and compare, to see if it's identical in handling. Agree, the Saito Gassers are way too expensive for the average guy, they've simply priced themselves out of the market. We have one Saito gasser in the club, think it's around 15cc, but not sure. Owner had a hell of a time tuning it last season, but this year, it's totally dialled in, starts instantly, and gobs of power, never a hesitation. Assuming the thing just needed a lot of break-in, the guy loves it. But, man, way too pricey!

Re: Switching from nitro to gas planes
Besides the concern of incompatible materials if it is one of the old square cube glo fuel pumps they could be considered unsafe around gasoline as the electric motors were not made vapor proof.

Re: Switching from nitro to gas planes
Most people that fly gas will use metal gear servos.
I have a Great Plains Giant Super Sportster. I believe this airfame with a 20-30cc gas engine is almost the perfect plane for a first gasser. Just looked at the GH web site, wow, things are gettin' pricey! |
