Could be a problem?

"FAA tests over the past year show that when the batteries short-circuit they emit hydrogen and other gases that can build up. When the gases ignite, they cause fierce explosions and unleash fires that are very difficult to put out. The halon fire suppression systems in the cargo compartments of airliners have been shown to be ineffective against battery fires. The systems have been able to put out the initial flames from overheated batteries, but are unable to stop the batteries from continuing to overheat and reigniting."

Re: Boeing Warns About Shipping LiPo's

so ... not more laptops and iphones on the aircraft?? All using lithium batteries which have potential to ignite. Maybe not as loose and open to damage as are RC lipo in shipping cartons I guess.

Re: Boeing Warns About Shipping LiPo's

So? Now they will just have to start coming by boat.

No biggie. HK has already addressed much of this with their HK USA warehouses. You can be sure their inventory comes via overseas shipping container.

And I notice the article talks about shipments in the cargo hold. I know from experience that if you do take flying batteries with you on a trip, you are supposed to bring them as carry-on baggage. its probably safer that way because you can keep the batteries safe(er) and can probably get at them if something went awry.

A few lipos in your carry-on should be no problem. I think most of the worries are from bulk packaging thousands at a time.

Re: Boeing Warns About Shipping LiPo's

Couriers have stopped shipping Lipo's to Australia and New Zealand.

I imagine it's just a matter of time before we see further courier shipping bans.
As Max said. They can come by boat.

But that's great if north American distrubutors are set up and have stock.

A friend of mine has been shopping for some 4s packs. Nobody in north america has stock of much at this time of year.
His only real option is to order from Asia. If the couriers stop. It could leave a lot of people waiting a long time to fly a new plane.

What size of batteries is your friend looking for? snhobbies.com has 4s from 1800-4000, rotorquest.com also has some.

Re: Boeing Warns About Shipping LiPo's

It's about time the airline industry started getting serious about addressing this issue. I don't think any of us here would be comfortable having family on an airliner hung out over the Pacific with a container of lipos onboard.

Re: Boeing Warns About Shipping LiPo's

The airline industry has been serious about the LiPo shipping issue for several years. All international loose LiPos are supposed to go as dangerous goods on freight airplanes only. That is why Fedex is the only shipping option from the US on HK, etc. They have their own cargo airplanes that handle all sorts of dangerous goods, like epoxy.

Domestically, post will still take up to about 9aH of 3S LiPos (based on lithium content), but they are supposed to be identified as such by a special label. LiPos are only shipped post by ground transport.

An ammo box might contain the local flames, but it would not stop the hydrogen generation or the ignition of other nearby materials. Look at Boeing's design for the Dreamliner on-board LiPo. Containing a LiPo fire is not easy.

Kevin

Re: Boeing Warns About Shipping LiPo's

I ordered a small 1200mAh receiver pack and Amazon had a warning tag on the box. That's the first I'd seen it before but it's good to have the instructions for the shipper in case of an issue.

I just ordered 45000mAh of batteries shipped from HK USA to an American residence and they made me split the order. in two. Knowing the damage a single 3s 5000mAh pack can do, I think they made the right decision although they will probably end up on the same conveyor belts, trucks and same post office in the end. I'm waiting for them to put a limit on driving them across the border.
