what do you use for smoke oil??

do you buy it or you make it?

I was watching a show on discovery and they showed a full size GMC that used plain antifreeze and WOW did it smoke I have no idea if this would work on a model engine but I have to admit it got me thinking
The smoke was so full that a car 5 feet back couldn't be seen Now I have seen many planes both Real and model and NONE put out that much smoke

I've also heard of guys using diesel and auto transmission fluid 1 Diesel 3 part tranny

I use diesel and concrete form oil, the stuff construction boys use to coat their forms prior to pouring cement. 50/50 and she smokes very well. FWIW, I talked to the Pepsi sky writing team when they were here in Lethbridge a few years back and they use the same oil, but 100% oil and no diesel. I tried it, but have better success w/ the mix.

I've tried fooling around with mixing up my own brews of smoke fluids but wasn't too successful and its messy.

The best I have personally found was "Super Dri Smoke Oil" purchased at the local hobby store. Works great but it is expensive.

i have tried diesel ,diesel and karosene mix,antifreeze, but none work near as good as the super-dri smoke oil you cn buy from great hobbies or hobby wholsale. hope you like the pics.

Let me also add that I use Super-Dri smoke oil, and am constantly getting compliments on how good the smoke looks.

It is a bit expensive, but you can lessen that expense a bit if you ask your LHS to order in a 5 gallon pail. I transfer from that to a 1 gallon gas can (red plastic type) and use the same hand pump I use for the gas (drain the pump lines before transferring.)

I'll also add that I'm having great success with the Sullivan Skywriter smoke pump on my PW Extra 300 with DA50. The instructions say that you can use a 4.8v to 12v battery. I'm using a 4.8v 800mah battery and it will pump smoke all day! It is a variable speed pump that uses a servo channel that can be mixed to the throttle. I have a 16oz smoke tank in the plane, and can get about 4:00 minutes of solid smoke, followed by a couple of minutes of smoke on the uplines (clunk is out of the oil on the downlines.)

I have used bug oil you know the stuff you us in the bug foggers from any hardware store and it helps keep the bugs away.You can get some with different scents as well.

I too have been experimenting with the homebrew smoke oil. I tend to use the homebrew for most flights, but break out the Super Dri to entertain any spectators who might show up.

The most recent alternative I have had some success with is a 100% parrafin lamp oil that I found in the supermarket of all places! It was about $6.50 for 1 gallon. It smokes better than the diesel/kero mix, and does linger long enough to complete a large loop. But it isn't SuperDri when it comes to hang time.

I am running a TME II on 4.8v with 1/8 ID lines and no line restriction. The engine is a ZDZ40 with a Bisson Muffler.
