A friend whom I met while living in the North, had his wife sew up some odd shaped cloth bags he filled them with sand, and they worked great for the most part.

One time at the field he asked me if I could help him set up the new plane he just finished building. Said it was too hairy for him to handle. He got it airborne and handed me the Tx. Man what a handful, and totally unstable. I landed it quickly and told him it felt way too tail heavy and had he balanced it before flying, to which he obviously said NO!

Did the fingers under the wing at the spar balance thing and sure enough it was way tail heavy. Can't understand it he said. Took the wing off and started checking it out and he had left one of the smaller sandbags inside the fuse as he was building to keep it steady while he glued the other half on! It was really wedged in there. I took a pocket knife and tied it to a short stick and reached in and sliced open the bag to dump out the sand. Once it was empty we could easily remove the bag.

Boy, did it ever fly nice after getting out that extra pound of sand!

I swear, this is a true story! Can't still quite figure out how he was able to overlook a sand bag while completing the building and covering. Perhaps he too had consumed some joy juice while building!
