Even if it is metal, the paint on the downspout should insulate it from the gear wire, and as long as any leads to the Rx aren't too close it shouldn't cause any more difficulty than normal gear wire, I think.

In any case, I have some plastic downspout to try it with. More than anything I like the attachment method. It just means I need to make new gear wires, and cannot use the stock ones that come on the planes.

The simple crud method i use is, take a piece of 1/4" ply cut to shape, screw a piece of crazy carpet to the bottom, If for aluminum gear I glue a piece of 1/8" ply fitted under the aluminum, if for wire gear I drill a hole into a wheel collar, solder a e-z connector with the hole off center, put a eyelet on back of ski, run a piece of music wire through the e-z connector and eyelet.
