How To: Change Traxxas Receiver to Spektrum
For the guys who have Radios that can bind to multiple receives, this is a must have not only in our Traxxas RC trucks, but our other rigs as well.
Equipment In this how-to: Spektrum DX3s DSM Sport system (manual here) Spektrum SR3000 Sport Surface Receiver (manual here) Traxxas Slash 2WD (manual here) (parts exploded) Tools 2.0 mm Hex 8mm wrench How To: Grab your 2.0 mm Hex and start removing the 2 screws from the main receiver box. Once you remove the top cover you will see this spaghetti. Onto the next step of removing the antenna. 2 more screws from the water proofing cover of the receiver box. Track the sizes, these are slightly smaller (2.5 x than the first 2 screws. Once the cover is removed, you will see how the server / throttle and antenna wires are snug and waterproofed. Next step is to remove the receiver antenna wire which requires you to loosen up the antenna mount. Grab your 8 mm wrench and loosen the anodized bolt that holds the antenna tube. My antenna had a hard metal shield which wouldn't allow for me to just remove the antenna without grabbing the 2.0 hex and remove to more screws from the bottom of the radio box. Here is both the receivers. On the left is the stock Traxxas Link receiver vs the Spektrum SR3000 Sport Surface Receiver. Both are 2.4 ghz. Sadly we cannot bind the Traxxas Link receiver to the Spektrum DX3S radio I had to trim my steering servo and esc female jumpers to fit in my receiver. This is common. See the lip below? Scissors lined up and ready to go, just trim a bit off the jumpers With the ESC and the Servo plugged into the SR3000 its time to add the bind jumper (provided with new receiver). With the bind jumper in the receiver the SR3000 should blink green very fast when powered up. Turn your Spektrum DX3S radio on. Go to Model Select and select an unused model selection area. Select it. Exit. Model Rename. In my case I named it Stadium. Exit. *elevate all wheels or unplug 1 wire from your motor* With your Spektruk DX3s (or other Spektrum radios) go to your Bind option for that model you just created. Scroll down, Bind. The receiver should have stopped blinking with the successful binding. With the power off to your receiver, remove the Bind jumper. Now, with your vehicle elevated so the wheels aren't on the ground, power on the ESC / receiver. Now test your bind, do you have steering and throttle? Traxxas suggests unplugging 1 wire to your motor so ensure it is plugged back in. NOTE: It's not uncommon after a receiver bind that your ESC needs to relearn throttle position. Page 15 of the Traxxas Slash user manual. So, if your Traxxas has no throttle after a bind, read over the manual. Its a very easy quick fix generally. |

Re: How To: Change Traxxas Receiver to Spektrum
Awesome tutorial RCRick!
This will be extremely helpful when I upgrade the AM transmitter and receiver in my Rustler to 2.4GHz. |

Re: How To: Change Traxxas Receiver to Spektrum
A fantastic upgrade and I happen to be using a DX3S as well.
FWIW - I believe the Traxxas 2.4 radios can bind to up to 30 (?) receivers and they do an auto handshake when the model is powered up so you don't need to change models on the radio. Still a basic radio but I thought that was pretty neat.. |

Re: How To: Change Traxxas Receiver to Spektrum
Good tutorial but for the average user (not racing- just bashing) is there much of a benefit in upgrading over the stock 2.4GHz that Traxxas provides in the RTR?

Re: How To: Change Traxxas Receiver to Spektrum
For me, it was a matter of having 1 remote vs a remote for every vehicle i have. Convenience was a big factor, actually that may have been the only factor

Re: How To: Change Traxxas Receiver to Spektrum
I have the Spektrum DX4S radio. You can put up to 30 different models on it at once. The limits adjustments on it are very fine and easy to set up for each model. I have 5 nitro bikes , 2 Tmaxx nitro 3.3s 1 Tmaxx 2.5 nitro. 2 electric crawlers and a 90 Gasser hovercraft on mine now. Each has it's own finite settings at the touch of the scroll bar.
If you go with Spectrum. you can't go wrong. But if you do. You might as well go with everything Spectrum, because Spektrum DSMR AVC technology is not compatible with most other systems. so I use Spektrum SRS4210 SRS4210 DSMR AVC Surface receivers and Spectrum Digital servos in all my models. Orange receivers are the only other 2.4 receivers I have found to be compatible and work properly with Spektrum. You can Micky Mouse other brands together with the older Spectrum radios, but it will have bugs and effect your servo settings and cause glitches/twitches. Better to spend a little extra money and do it right. |
