well, almost, I doubt it will stop people from overflying the flight line, it will need a GPS for that.

Thumbs down Re: no more bad pilots

Takes all the SKILL out of aerobatics doesn't it?

Re: no more bad pilots

I'll finally be able to hover my planes. Nah I'll still find a way to screw it up

Re: no more bad pilots

I love the advances of technology and how its being adapted into R/C but the downside is that its creating a generation of people who have no idea how to fix or understand how the aircraft works or why it even stays in the air.
Even though I get the ARF kits as I have limited space to build planes I dream of the day I can build a kit.
I can fix my planes and I understand how they work, and not just that I plug my wires into a box and turn on my laptop.

I know that new technology brings a ton of new people to our hobby but sorry to say a good percentage of them (even after they know how to fly) have no clue what to do after they crash or even how to setup and trim their aircraft.

I do repairs for a LHS and man some of the repairs I get blow my mind. Even to the extreme of not knowing how to repair a heli's main shaft or even changing and balancing rotors on heli's.

I'm not poo pooing new technology but I'm hoping that those who enter into our hobby come with a open mind and want to learn old school stuff also.

Agree wholeheartedly. On the other hand we do use the technological advances as well. We do use truly proportional control rather than the the single channel on/off pulse controls of years past, PCM, 2.4G, throttle control etc. I do remember using all of those (am I showing my age?) and am thankful of the precision it has brought to the hobby. Unfortunately some of those advances have made SKILL less important i.e. gyros, ARFs, computer controlled flight (this thread). Things like this would allow ME to do those aerobatic maneuvers without learning the skills to do them (I may never learn to do them or do them well) but the challenge is there.

Re: no more bad pilots

AAH modern technology.

Consider this. Forty years ago I built my own radio system from a kit. The transmitter could remember the settings for a thousand, NAY, a million or more models. Could anybody today figure out how it did this?

That is cool. I know of a couple of chronic crashers at my club that could use something like that...LOL

Meantime, for heli's a well priced version is already out there for CCPM helis, for only $77!

Seen a member put that on his heli and he has flown it hands off.

I ordered a set for my kids (will be installing it at the field tonight as a matter of fact!)

Re: no more bad pilots

Flying a model airplane is one of the things in life I never want to be fooled with - ie, I want to control my plane. Its the feeling of successes, learning to fly better, and perform more accurate and more difficult maneuvers.

Once the novelty thing is over.. what good is anything that requires skill to do, when it done for you by a computer?

(I am talking general sport flying)

Some things, like gyros that came along to assist heli flyers, and better radio systems to establish a good control link between ourselves and our models - thats fine. It doesnt fly for you any more than cruise control drives your car.

But I personally have zero interest in watching a computer fly a model airplane!
