Hi
Rear Servo Tray

I have accomplished the installation of the elevators and the rudder servos .
Left is the tail wheel servo . Everything went well , they operate perfectly with no binding what so ever . When I did the elevator servo rod and marked them for cutting , they came out identical in length , a good sign . The hinging work I did yesterday works well , I am pleased with the tail performance .

Re: TopFlite P-51 Giant Assenbly

Hi
Tail-Wheel / Pull-Pull set-up

Right .............. I have set up the tail-wheel to the servo and what I was afraid of has happened , one servo needs to be reversed . that means that I have to get a servo reversed ( digital , with a programmer ) or I have to use a reversed Y-connection , and a third option is to use a match box . A fourth would be to use a mix in the transmitter , but my receiver is full , a 7 channel . So ....... I get to chose door #1 , #2 or #3 . I will think about the problem . I have already tryed it with a match-box , and it works great , but I do not know , if it is the right way to solve the problem

Re: TopFlite P-51 Giant Assenbly

Hi

FireWall BackPlate / Strut Door Brackets

What you are about to look at took 3 hours , .......... OK I am slow . The holes in the plate had to be 66mm X 78mm , on a 4 X 4 inch plate , and perfectly square . I do not have any great metal cutting equipment . And thats what makes it difficolt . What I used was a piece of angle stock , a jig saw and clamps , metal ruler , an auto punch , protracter , and a drill press . This plate is what is going to stop the stand-offs from twisting .

The brackets for the strut doors had to be taped 2-56 , and than countersunk 3/32 X1/8 , for the reason being that the ball links are not taped there full length . The base of the ball links must rest flush with the side of the bracket , or if you have a mishap , the ball will break off and you lose the ball link, and the bracket .

Now I know why this hobby does not pay by the hour

Re: TopFlite P-51 Giant Assenbly

Hi

The New FireWall Look

Okay........ I have removed what was needed to install the firewall plate . That hard wood was really in there . In the picture that you see the blacks that need to be sanded , it looks like a mess . But i can assure you it will look nice and clean when it is finished . I also included a picture with the stand-offs installed . The shorter extensions will be machined or replaced with the length of 5/8 inch , I am not afraid to add weight to this front end , because I know that I will add weight when I do the CG , I still have to do the fiberglassing inside behind the firewall . I will not be adding a lot , just eneogh to secure the firewall to the fuselage .

Re: TopFlite P-51 Giant Assenbly

Hi
Although I told myself I would not be in the workshop to-night , I have decided to work on the computer to establish the power management system that I will need for this 50cc WarBird .
My radio system is a JR-7202 and my receiver is a , R-790 . Six for the aircraft control , and one channel for the KILL switch .
There are 10 sercos in all :
2 X ailerons
2 X flaps
1 X rudder
1 X tail wheel
1 X throttle
2 X elevators
1 X for the retracts
3 X JR matchbox's
3 X switches , heavy duty / charge jack
3 X 2700 Mah Ni-cad batterys
1 X opto kill switch .

All servos are digital and high tork , Hitec , 5625sMG

I have sent E-Mails to 3 top people . Two club members , who compete and one independent .
So.......... I will keep you informed about what I will be putting in the aircraft .

I want to keep it simple and I want it reliable . I will be useing Ni-Cads for this year , and next year I will be changing to the A-123 system

And please if anyone has something that they would like to share , PLEASE feel free to jump in . This is a very important part of the build . I do not want this bird coming down because of lack of electrical power , or power failer . Its no time to be cheap .or unsafe , PERIOD

Later
Michel

Re: TopFlite P-51 Giant Assenbly

Hi

I have come to a conclusion ............ going into gas from glow and adding onto that giant scale , sure does have its headachs .
As for the power management solution , I have decided to go with a Smart Fly power expander , and change the type of batterys .

I worked most of the week-end on the second wing , and finishing it up . I installed the retracts , and changed the flap servo rods , which I did not like in the first place . The second wing is complete , except , for the lowwer front fairing , and the air scoop , at the lower rear of the wing . These can only be put on with the wing asembled to the fuseloge .

The owner of the second plane , brought over his new engine , a MT-57 , and I must say , what a brute of an engine , WoW . I think that it really well built . It much heavyer that my Da50 . It has beefed up crank case , and were the stand-offs go , they attach dirrectly to the crankcase bolts s . It has a rear carb . It fits into the Mustang very nicely .

Re: TopFlite P-51 Giant Assenbly

Hi

Well............. we are advanceing in the second P-51 . I have marked and cut out the back-plate for the second P-51 , and I must say this has got to be the most fun part of asembling / building of a warbird . The plate and the spacers behind the plate , it came out to exactly , 7 3/4 inch . The openning behinh the carb , came out perfect , this engine will have plenty of breathing space . If you look at one of the last pictures you will see that the head of the engine shows very little . I find it very exciting when I see pictures like this . The MT-57 looks nothing less trhan ......... FANTASTIC ...... If I may , I would like to call this engine , a DA-50 on steroids , Ha Ha Ha .

IF YOU ARE EASLY EXCITED ............. DO NOT LOOK AT THESE PICTURES

NO DROOLING ALLOWED

Re: TopFlite P-51 Giant Assenbly

Hi

Well ................ now that the excitment is over , its time to get back to the serious installations , like the throddle and choke . I have cleaned up the backplate , with rounded corners , it looks much better . I have also turned the carburater around , so that the throddle and choke are on the right side of the fueloge . There is more space to work with , the offset of the engine , makes it that way . You can turn the carb , but you can not turn the reed valve body , the cylinder gets in the way . What happens is that you end up with a long tube for the pump of the carburater . If you look at the pictures of yesterday , and the ones at present , you will see what I mean . The right side of the engine is really crowded , you have the gas intake , the choke and the throddle , very tight place . We will see how it comes out .

Re: TopFlite P-51 Giant Assenbly

Hi
Moveing along ........... I have been working with the throddle linkage and I think I have it . When working on this part of the engine , I am looking for two things . 1) smoothness , and 2) reliabilaty , and I think I have it . I have also been working on a shelf for the ignition moduel . It is made out of very light alluminum amd , I put lightening holes in it to make it that much lighter . This part ( the shelf ) is undecided at the moment .
