hey Curt, this one has been alot of fun. I am just glad it was a lawn rocket instead of a lawn dart...when are we all going to get together for a fly?

Re: My winter project

Having flown an ultra-light canard and designed at least one model canard maybe I can help. You have to calculate the wing loading of both the front and rear wing and make the wing loading per square inch of the front wing about 15% more than the main wing . To land the aircraft just bring it down close to the field and keep it level, as the speed bleeds off it will settle to the ground. Do not try to pull the nose up or the lawn dart thing will be a reality.

Re: My winter project

Interesting projects. My wingter projects are just hopes and promises. Between the major redecoration and renavation of the house and three family weddings (daughter, grand-daughter and great-niece), I'll be lucky to finish LAST year's projects, let alone start a new crop....

Re: My winter project

Curt, I know this year was just about a right off, only consumed 3 gallons of gas. oh well have to dig out the skis soon . Oh btw curt, how do 4 strokes like the cold? I Put a satio 72 in my decathlon, I am really starting to like 4 strokes.

I have an evolution 60 for this one, it is a bit lighter then my evo 52's.

kip thanks for the tips, nice to know someone knows something about the flight characteristics of a canard.

Re: My winter project

Same here Dave... about 3 1/2 gals of glow fuel.

I have only flown 2 strokes in the winter, but I assume that the 4 strokes would be OK also... just that glows can be a pain to get started when it is colder. I usually preheat the cylinder head with a small micro torch... seems to help a lot.

I have 3 lekkies that I will be using in the winter from now on..... charge and fly is much simpler and the hands don't get as cold trying to start them.

Re: My winter project

got it back together and was pleasantly satisfied with the outcome with making the fuselage 8 inches longer and moving stuff around. I managed to cut the weight of the plane down by 4-5 ounces and the amount of dead weight needed by just about 12 ounces, so about a pound of weight saving. before with the dead weight needed for balancing and weight of the planes itself it was over the 9 lbs, close to the 9 1/2 pounds(give or take). Now fully dresses it weighing in at 8 lbs 10 oz. Hopefully I will have more success getting it airborne this time around. I will post some pics of what I did later.

Re: My winter project

Well, done again..this time alot lighter. dry weight 8.10 with an addition of 1.25 oz to front end. before i had to add around 12 oz to the front to even come close to balancing. what i did to make it lighter was constructing the frame in a semi geodesic airframe. light yet strong, after that covered with 1/32 balsa, quite surprised no twist in the frame, figured having the canard upfront may led to some unwanted twisting. Moved fuel tank past CG, batteries in the nose add battery for retracts. I tried to eliminate the amount of dead into weight that is supposed to be there. I took about 4 hours to do the frame after was done smooth sailing, and with extending the fusalge by 8 inches sure did help balancing the thing.

now just to get it into the air.
