How To: Water Proof your servo (axial servo waterproofed)

My son has no regard for water and in fairness neither do I when having fun. I have neglected water proofing my gear for ages. Splash resistent is not enough when you are in the the thick of it.

So, here you go, a quick tutorial. This is a DIY project, I offer no warranty on your work (or on mine. lol ) or my suggestions.

Builder beware

Tools:

Philips screw driver

Material: (based on my water proofing below)

A cleaner to clean your external servo housing.
A rag(s)
Silicone - RTV
Grease (i used Shock O-Ring Grease - green by Losi )
Liquid Electrical Tape
Masking Tape
Something to create a stand for the servo.

Lets begin

Remove the Servo. In this case it was a stock axial servo from the AX10.

I opted to also remove the ESC and spektrum receiver.

The servo we can really waterproof, reality is the receiver without custom work will be susceptible to water entering from the top.

Remove the 4 screws from the bottom of the servo

Disassembled the Axial servo. Nows a good time to snap a picture with your phone incase your servo setup is not similar to this Nothing like it becoming fully disassembled.

Time to silicone the electronics Make sure to pack the crevasses and anywhere you think water may make its way.

Time to add the grease. I am using the Losi Shock O-Ring grease.

We aren't looking to pack the gear housing full, just the output shaft of the servo.

Walking way from your servo. Let the silicone set for 24 hours.

!!!!!!!!!! TEST YOUR SERVO !!!!!!!!!!
* some will say why bother. trust me, now is a good time to make sure it is functioning properly.
** its important to make sure the servo gears have been installed correctly and isn't operating properly because of the locking pin and gear being not done right.

Now that the internals of the servo are complete, lets attack the external housing. Remember to clean the servo housing as best as possible. Remove any grease, silicone and grime.

Before I started applying liquid electrical tape I created a cardboard stand. Super cost affective. Also using a long servo horn would really help with moving the servo around as you coat it with the liquid electrical tape brush.

Lets apply Liquid Electrical Tape. Some people like plastidip. I had even considered using rinogaurd for this.

At the end I decided to Liquid Electric tape the receiver and ESC seems. My thought was that if some water got into its water proof housing they will be in at least having the seems water proofed may offer some security. Overall, this was just for fun :P

Re: How To: Water Proof your servo (axial servo waterproofed)

Very nice!
just saying

you can replace liquid electrical tape with plastic dip
there is a user that sells plastic dip on this forum (qaz393)

and also to safe most people's time if you don't know where to get liquid electrical tape, cause even if you as k the employee's, 90% they won't even know what it is....

but i've found them at Canadian tire in the lube section
thats also where i found the marine grease you might want for waterproofing bearings and such

at the canadian tire i go to, it is located in front of the tires section

Hope this helps~

Plastidip can also be found at the local homehardware, it's about the only place I found it.

For the receiver, I usually use a traxxas "waterproof" receiver box. If you have the space it's ideal.

Re: How To: Water Proof your servo (axial servo waterproofed)

just a warning never use liquid electrical tape directly on electronics . I tried that once in a first attempt at waterproofing ,it shorted out the PC board, sort of supprised it would do that seeing as its for electrical components . siliicone as shown works fine . Roger

Bel-ray makes a waterproof grease for use on atv,s and bikes, and watercraft. I use it a lot works great doesnt dissipate with heat. I use it on servo motors for trim units on personal watercraft as well and it has never failed.

Can you document some of the results via video or camera? I would be curious and would be great to have as a reference here.

Re: How To: Water Proof your servo (axial servo waterproofed)

Liquid tape does NOT ruin circuit boards - Confirmed

Did some test with a board full of resistors
Tested nothing was shorted before putting on the liquid tape
Tested nothing was shorted after applying the liquid tape while it's still wet
Tested nothing was shorted after applying the liquid tape after it has dried

Works perfectly fine for me!

I have a video making a fool of my self that I'm currently uploading, will post later

Will try try to get a actual working board with surface mount when i get one.... (course unless someone wants to donate one or try one them self feel free )
Edit:

Time to embarrass the hell out of my self
