Other than that, I fly infrequently in the real cold to tell, but I have also only experienced one plane that had a few hinges on one aileron break, and it was a used plane. I thought the builder may have used too much CA and it was caked up along the hinge line.

I get my hinges from Jim Moss as well. He has a larger hinge version that I got for my CG Sukhoi.

Just a couple other suggestions that I have found useful!

If your worried that the C/A hinges that come with some kits/ARFs are not large or strong enough you can buy the C/A hinge material which comes in sheets about 2" wide and about 10 or 12" long and cut your own larger ones. Also what I have done on a larger plane is space out the hinges to add a couple extra per control surface increasing the safety factor should one break.

I wonder, can you double a CA hinge by putting two back to back
to add strength or is this a crazy idea. Would it be too stiff and
restrict movement?

I would think just using more of them will distribute the load better, not using thicker ones. JMO though...

I still think the leading cause of breaking hinges is too much CA. It really doesnt take much to glue them in.

Randy, if I bought a $1200 ARF I would want a robart hinge point too

Then again, I have had two of them break on me... Nothings 100% perfect!

I've take to doing the following: On surfaces that have a "V" leading edge I cut back into the surface about 1/8" on both sides of where the hinge will be. I clean out the material between the cuts so that even when the gap between the (say) stab and elevator is almost zero, the hinge still has 1/8" to allow a bend rather than a kink. T.

The Hinges that Andrew and Nuker are talking about I started picking up about 8 years ago in Toledo.

Have yet to have one break, (touch Balsa ), I since bought them in packages of 1000 so I could pass the savings on to local friends (and yes even Randy if he wants some )

I have the normal size and a double size that I use on my Big Birds.

I've only managed to break (rip actually) one of these hinges, I put one half in a vise and using a pair of pliers and lots of effort managed to rip it in half.

I alternate CA & pinned hinges on large wings -- belt & suspenders.
