Hi everybody,

since my favorite thread has been closed down I decided to start another one because for my part I want to continue sharing with all the great people that were contributing to that thread. Mike I really want to see the ending of your current build and all those neat building tricks your sharing with everybody.

I don't consider this thread my own, everybody is welcome to add to it, even if the subject is P-51's anything related to flying stuff is most welcome, either your current project or pictures or whatever crosses your mind.

I for one am anxious to get to spring time and fly again! My P51 (H9 1.50 77" wingspan, saito 1.80) is back from a rather monster crash and almost ready to fly again, I'm also currently building a Learjet 35A from an old Great Planes kit, that thing will be a blast.

Here are some pictures to start this off, please keep this one going!

Last picture is the Mustang gang with my good buddies Mike and Pami, 2 more should join in this year

Jacques,
Your Mustangs are beautiful!
I'm here in Florida and was at a Giant scale meet last weekend. There was a Mustang there you would have enjoyed. It was powered by a three cylindered motor that the builder had made. We saw it fly many times. The sound was very real . The guy took off and flew it at near full power for a complete flight ,15 minutes, doing the things a Mustang shoud do. Have a great summer of fun with yours.

Was enjoying your thread Michel and quite disgusted that someone would cause it to be shut down.

Hi

Great.................. lets get it on

First.......... I delivered the Spitfire to-day , the pilot was happy with what I came up with . Wow ...... the Spitfire is a beautiful plane . He brought over the wing and I was able to see the WarBird in one piece , GREAT looking plane

The first and last picture show , the right and left side . Pictures #2 and #3 are is the bird on its own two feet ( some really cool about that when you see it for the first time

On to the BBD-3

Re: New giant P51 thread, hijack this one PLEASE!

Hi

The last post that I did was on the retracts . I made the tie-rods for the outer doors , and done the tweaking at the same time . They look OK , but have much to be desired , if you look at ARFs from Aero Works . But , the are very solid and are acceptable . The retracts were installed permanently along with the air line . While installing the retracts I only used the screw positions on the outer corner of the retract blocks . The reason for this is that , 4 screws is plenty lots of holding power . I am absolutely positive that those four screws can hold up to 300LBS . I would rather the retract rails rip-out , than the wing rip apart , and believe me , I know what I am talking about .

The first two pictures are the assembly of the retracts in the closed position . The third picture is the hinging of the doors . And the last is a picture of the outer door with the length shortened . We fly off a grass field , and at the lenth that they were , was just asking for trouble .

Next .......... Wing control surfaces and servos

Re: New giant P51 thread, hijack this one PLEASE!

Hi
The wing control surfaces and servos .

To start with , I passed an iron on the Mono cote , to shrink it and help the look . If it stays that way GREAT , but I think I am dreaming in color

The covering for the hatches was removed and the hatches were fitted in the respective places . The hole were marked, and drilled All of the holes for the hatches were pilot drilled and than drilled for a #2 screws . The drilling for the hatches were all done with the hatches in the respective places . The final drilling was drilling the hatches with a 3/32 drill , Also all the holes were Ca,ed for strength and durability . I have also learn t that the Robart hinges were CA,ed in place , instead of using epoxy or gorilla glue , I do not know if it makes a difference , but I have always read that you are not to use CA on these plastic hinges .I little trick that I found useful was to use a soldering iron to open up the screw holes for the hatches after the were covered , it helped a lot to keep the covering in place , when screwing down the hatch . I am sure I have read that trick somewhere

The openings for the servo arms had to be enlarged to accommodate the centering of the arm itself . The were widened and lengthen ( it was another reason why I removed the covering ) I had the same problem with the other two planes , it was a lot smoother going this time around . Also this time I installed the decal under the right wing so as to save some time

While installing the air line that was stretched out a long time ago , so that installation would be a lot easier . I left about 5 inches of free air line inside for maintenance reasons , when pulling out the retracts or wires .

The first two pictures are of the wing and the control surfaces . The third picture is what happens when you get all those wires and air lines to-gether , there is most certainly going to be a clean-up the . Hold downs for the wires and airlines . as well as a mount for the JR Match Box . Thats why I have the 1/16 ply glue to the surface of the wing . The fourth picture is the right wing with the decal . In the picture you can see that the opening for the servo arms are a lot larger

Well thats it for to day , its my wife birthday ( I bought her a beautiful ring , thats her thing ) and I am tired . I still have more to post but I will let it go till to-morrow

Have a comfortable evening , and as alway ............. lets have fun

Later

Michel
