Looking towards my next radio purchase and trying to figure out why I should care whether I've got 2, 3 or 4 channels?

I haven't used telemetry yet and not certain that I will. I run 1/10 buggy, SCT and a Mini 8ight. All lipo, indoor on clay. Steering, throttle and transponder - that's it. I can't think of anything else that might have an impact on future choices.

The number of channels obviously affects the price, but I don't want to save money today only to regret it later.

For the cost, going with the most channels you can afford makes sense. The difference in cost between a 3 channel and a 6 channel is negligible, So why not get the most?


Too many guys think so minimalist when starting- "Oh, all I need is throttle and steering" So they buy a cheap 2 channel. The are so proud of themselves because they saved a few bucks.

Then before you know it, they get creative and want to build something like a police car. Lights(another channel), then siren(another channel) then a programmable audio playback(another channel). That "bargain" 2 channel doesn't look so good anymore when they realize for a few bucks more, they could have gotten a 4 or 6 channel radio. Now they are stuck with a 2 channel no one wants (good luck trying to get any money back when you sell that) and have to fork over more money to buy a 4 or 6 channel. By then its too late for them to realize they should have gotten the higher channel radio from the get-go.

Also, in your hand, a 4 or 6 channel radio "feels" better. It also has better quality hardware since it is a more advanced radio than just a run-of-the-mill entry level chap-o
