Do you "improve" your pilot figures?
Ok I have the paints I'm going to use on my Williams Bros pilot and am ready to start. I also came across a MAN article with suggestions on how to improve (and paint) him.
One personalization was to modify his features (more human eyes, a moustache, etc) and they suggested Sig Epoxolite. My question is: does anyone here do these kind of mods? Do you use this epoxolite or something else? The pilot is styrene. Will autobody glazing putty stick to it? Is it cheaper than epoxolite? Would mixing some micro balloons with epoxy work? Any suggestions regarding adding these kinds of features? |

Painting a piolet
I used oil paints to paint my piolet with , Raw umber makes a good flesh tone ,mix in burnt umber for shadows around nose and neck. With oil paints you can build up thickness for hair or a moustache . The oil paint is thick artist paint found in an art store . Once the paint is dry it is fuel proof my pilot still looks good after ten years

As you read this post, I have a 1/3 scale pilot figure being done for me at Pilots' First. They do the most awsome realistic job that I have ever seen.
This is not a cheep project thought. A 1/3 scale figure will cost you in the neighbourhood of $30 from Great Hobbies and then Pilot's First reworks the figure (cuts the body down to fit your cockpit and grinds off the ear phones etc.) Then the figure is hand painted for realism. Their charge for this: $150.00. But if you want the absolute best and these are, then its worth every penny! I have done my own figures and it has turned out pretty good actually. I purchased some acrylic paints from the dollar store....yep, they work great! I then made my own headset from balsa and used pieces of an aluminum pop or beer can for the straps. Used a paperclip sealed in shrink wrap for the microphone piece with triple heat shrink tube at the end for the microphone. I made a wire sunglass frame from a paper clip and used the amber coloured plastic that is used for the negatives when you have photos developed for the lenses of the glasses. You can do all sorts of neat things with just everyday items laying around the house to detail your pilot figure. Just experiment and have fun, you'll surprise yourself as to how nice it will look when finished!

As usual Jim you have to take the bottom line in products and try to exhault them in your own mind and convince others that they are as good as if not better than top of the line equipment! I dare you to tell me of a movie where they show the pilot in an aircraft or helicopter wearing anything but Dave Clark Headsets! I think you do this just to be contrary Jim and get a raise out of people because you can't possibly or honestly believe that Cessna is better than Piper and that your Telex headset is better than DC or that a Yak is better than an Edge. Come on Jim, now I know your just being facetious! Because, how could you pick the lesser qualities items all the time and really honestly believe you have the best...and not just be kidding?
