Re: planning to get my first off road truck! suggestions?

Traxxas is good for starting with. They are pretty tough, and even the brushed ones are pretty fast. But, I think you might get bored with them fairly quick. They are pretty simple to use and fix, and can take a beating. My 2wd Slash actually does wheelies in the grass when you stab the throttle, and thats with a nimh battery. You might get more out of a HPI Bullet Flux MT/ST or Wheelie King 4x4. Now that I know, I wish I had purchased either of those instead of the Slash. My Slash lasted about 2 weeks as a truck and I converted it to a Baja Buggy to make it interesting. Now its a lot more fun to bash around, but a Bullet MT would be a lot better. One problem with Traxxas stuff, IMO, is that they don't really do anything extremely well, but do a lot of things pretty well. It would be better if you knew what type of off roading you like. If you want to rock crawl, get a crawler like a Losi Night Crawler or Axial Ridgecrest. Actually, the Ridgecrest would probably be my recommendation. It crawls and is pretty quick and can do other stuff pretty good. I have the Wraith, but I would recommend the Ridgecrest as a better all around fun truck.
Have fun

Losi rtr xxx sct or scb I saw won of the scb (short course buggy) at the track the other day and I was pretty impressed with it. Right out of the box it does well and for the price you'll have a brushless system before you know it.

There are a few designs to choose from.

Grab a used savage x for bashing. I have Three and have never been let down. Not the best track machine but an almost bulletproof basher. My 2c

Don't forget to check out Traxxas' 1/16th VXL (brushless) vehicles. They are in your price range and 4x4. The e-Revo, Summit or Smash are all offered in the 1/16th scale and are waterproof like their big brothers. Throw a couple LiPos in one of them and they'll fly.

Re: planning to get my first off road truck! suggestions?

My thoughts after owning both the 1/16th e-revo and slash - don't get one of these for your first. They are difficult to work on for a first vehicle - small and everything is tightly packed in there. They are both a bit difficult to drive due to a combination of small size and amazing power.

I would say stick with the 1/10 size. If you have your mind set on 4x4 then you budget imposes a limitation there. But if you start out with a 2WD there are a bunch of great options. There is a reason that the 2WD monster truck style vehicles are still great sellers - they are relatively inexpensive, easy to maintain, extremely durable and wicked fun. The Traxxas Stampede and ARRMA Granite are both great examples of these. The Stadium truck style is also immensely popular for the same reasons - look at the TRX Rustler and Duratrax Evader (can get the brushless one for around $260).

My 2WD Stampede has seen more abuse than any of my other vehicle and gets no regular wrenching. I always let kids, beginners, and drunks drive this one when I am at the track. They have a blast jumping, crashing into the drivers stand, and pulling wheelies and the truck just absorbs the abuse. I think in about 40-50 packs they have broken two front control arms and burnt out a motor.

Re: planning to get my first off road truck! suggestions?

I agree about the 1/10th 2WD Stampede. My Dad's was picked up used and has been ran into fences, telephone poles, truck tires and jammed under a car's muffler and that's what I've witnessed. He has replaced shock caps, a servo saver and a gear and that's it. They just keep going.

Also, for the price, check out Redcat as well as they have some 1/10th brushless stuff very aggressively priced. Www.--------------.com is one of the forum sponsors.

Re: planning to get my first off road truck! suggestions?

For a first off road vehicle, the big thing to consider is 2wd or 4wd.

You said you where considering a Stampede 4x4, I had one.. here is my thoughts on it:
-Its Traxxas, so its pretty durable / tough
-Narrow, flips / tips easy
-Velineon System provides lots of power
-Got boring quick (which is why I sold it)

I would suggest a Slash 2wd or a 2wd if you can afford it. Go brushless if you go 2wd, you will thank yourself in the long run. I have a Slash 4wd, and I run it hard. Its real tough, durable... pretty stable and so versatile. It surprised me how well it handles rough off road terrain. It went everywhere a Stampede 4wd went.

Another option is a E-Maxx Brushed. Its just a beast, and still water proof. Its only downside is its Twin Titan brushed motors.

I would highly suggest to avoid Red Cat. Parts are very hard to get for them.

Hope this helps.
