Kerosene Quality

Last Winter I ran out of my trusty supply of Canadian Tire kero and ended up buying 20Lt of Shell K1. The can it came in looked like it just came off of the order truck and was crystal clear.

I had been using it on a Ram500, Moores and recently Wren44. The Ram500 had just came back from RTI with new Bearings and Pump, the starts were a little rough and longer than normal but never really thought too much of it till I finally had a huge flame at ramp up 2 months later, sent it back to RTI and had 3 clogged injectors. After it was fixed and using the same fuel the starts were a little better but still long and some flames, but not too bad. the Moores ran fine....trusty old piece of $%#*(I still love it though. The Wren 44 ran perfect on a buddies fuel and then I used the Shell and instantly no start just flames, about two days later we thought change the fuel and go back to Canadian Tire Kero and what a difference!!!! the Ram500 starts in quarter of the time and virtually no flame, the Wren 44 started like a Wren on the first try and Well the Moores....well it just runs anyway.

So.........anyone who has the opportunity to Buy Shell K1 please stay away from it, I really don't think it was a bad batch I'm sure it has a different formulation and has more of something(possibly sulphur) in it that causes the smaller finicky Turbines to dislike it and lead to clogging the injectors.

Thank you very much for the information, I'll keep that in mind, I hate having to ship turbines for repairs.

Angus, Shell K1 is not designed to work on our engines.
They are more for wick burners.
I am surprised your engine even ran on them

Stick to the trusted Canadian Tire Kero.

Hi Peter ; What about the kerosene from the CO-OP :

Would it be in the same class as the shell :

I have some left over for my heater that is why I ask.

I know that this co-op kerosene is easier to light than JET-A1.

I had to get the propane torch out to light up the JET-A1.
Once it was going it sure put out more btu's than the co-op stuff.

Here is where it can be very confusing for anyone following their instruction manual that says: use K1 or 1-K kerosene.

Jet Cat's listed Kerosene is 1-K recommended, Behotec says just Kerosene and PST says Kerosene. On to RCU and check what the Big USA boys say and they recommend K1 or 1-K.....hmmmmmm

Anyway I do believe this Brand of Kero clogged the injectors on the Ram500 and caused poor or no starts on the Wren.

John Wiebe from Model Aviation Products spoke with Carlos at RTI the other day day and Carlos mentioned that one flight can clog the injectors on the smaller turbines with some brands and poor quality kero.

So stay with CTC Kero. I now have lots in stock.

I have attached the specs on the Shell Kerosene. They have two types. Shell Kerosene and Shell 1-K Kerosene. Shell 1-K cannot be used for turbine engines.
As far as Behotec, they will run on a varierty of fuels including clean Diesel. That's what they use in Europe.

Kerosene from the Co-Op should work fine as well.

Hi Wayne, someone screwed up on the order

Hi Peter, could not get anything to download. But you must admit, if the the Turbine makers say Kerosene, K1 or 1-k, you just go out and buy whatever you can. If there is that much diffrence within the same designation of kerosene then the Turbine Dudes need to be more specific with their instructions...only makes sense.

I thought I followed everthing to the "T" by purchasing what was recommended...it eventually cost me $400 for a new injector ring.

Anyway, guys stay away from Shell Kerosene and go out and support you local CTC store
