Taking off with a tail dragger
I have been struggling to take off straight down the runway with my Flyzone Beaver tail dragger. It would swerved every which way, often doing a 180 degree spin around the runway. Then I read some tips about making sure the front wheels have a bit of toe in. I looked at my plane - the wheels toed out. So with vice grips in hand, I bent the aluminum landing gear to provide a bit of toe in.
The change was amazing. The plane now goes straight down the runway with very little rudder input needed. So, if you are having trouble taking off straight like I did, check for toe in. |

Re: Taking off with a tail dragger
Good point, my friend and I built Piper Cubs 40 size and we kept doing ground loops on takeoff .This was in a horse pasture and we cut a strip in deep grass so little damage was done if any. It was impossible to get air born, then one time I just added throttle slowly and it bounced around on the bad runway and then it flew. Our problem was trying to avoid the rough runway and jump our plane into the air with power it could not be done .

Re: Taking off with a tail dragger
good to know. I keep bending the gear on my 55" Cub due to extremely rough surface. But the plane has very effective flaps and more than adequate power. Add in a little breeze and she is off the ground in 5 feet, so never risk of ground loop on take off. Taxiing home .. yes big risk!
