ditto what they said! I like to save a buck when I can... not worth trying that trick with servos. I've changed servos and seen a vast and immediate difference in the way the plane responds.
The last time I needed a pair of servos, I spent over $400; that's a ton of cash, but it sure beats paying $100 and fighting with the plane every flight.

OK Scot but what did you use...... 7955 or 8711?

I've tended to lean toward Hitec TG servos as they have virtually zero wear on the gear train even after two seasons but the 8711 have superior centering. Replacment gear sets are only $7.95 from Chief aircraft so the 8711 is looking better to me right now.

It is nice to be able to program the Hitecs which eases initial setup but a Matchbox can cure that.

Right now I am looking for 8 servos for my new 40% and I am in the same boat as Chris not knowing which way to go.
