This is another P-51 he flew (I think it is 443 squadron) This plane still exists today in the museum in Ottawa..(If you check out the tail numbers you will see they are the same 9298..)

I've looked at a few museum websites, but I think I gonna have to dig deeper. Thanks for pointing them out, I'll go back and check some more.
For now, the lightning bolt is starting to grow on me...and the 442 squadron paint looks like what I might end up doing, like Tony's but with the red wing tips and stuff. OK, so what does she look like underneath, and what other registrations were done up in this paint. How about one from the City of Montreal Squadron...any body know if they had P-51's, and what they looked like? I'm pretty sure they did have some, but it never hurts to ask, and I have no idea what one might have looked like! Thanks for your time guys! Dean |

Mustangs
I built a GWS P51, and the thought of stars&bars didn't sit well, so I went into the local library and found a book on the history of the RCAF. It is a fairly large book, and it has a substantial section on P51s, and I used it for reference. It also traces the entry of the P51s into the RCAF, and their exit back into the US as privately-owned aircraft, as well as the Central/South American aircraft and their final disposition. Hoover's show aircraft is ex-RCAF. I'll try to get photos on here somehow.
Clearly the GWS kit isn't scale, so I took liberties: squadron marks are T DL, an ego trip. :P Problem is that I have no idea whether such ID existed on another aircraft! I Will see if I can find that book, it will help you a lot... |

P51s
Exactly right; who's gonna call you a liar? Anyone that does better know his squadron markings really well... This won't be the first model I've built with those letters: I built a Stinson Model U (look that one up if you are a multi fan, much easier than the Ford Trimotor!) with 3 diesels, 7' span, and the registration is CF-TDL. :P Same thing applies to RAF markings: what, exactly, if anything, carried the T DL markings? Who cares?? It is a Spitfire/Hurricane/Wimpy/Lanc/Moth/whatever, and few people will challenge the ID! Wheeeee!!!
Tried looking up the book today, will try again tomorrow... |

I've got some more information buried away somewhere (still packed in boxes). There was an article on Canadian Mustangs a couple of years ago in one of the British full scale mags, and I have some 442 squadron material with some pictures - including my father-in-laws crash after an engine failure on takeoff. I'll look tonight to see I can dig them out......
I was going to do up a Byron Mustang in the colours of one that he flew, but it was too big a project at the time....

P51s
Too many chores today to look up the book, will keep trying .
One of the photos is of a P51 that suffered an out-of-control dive. The pilot blacked out at altitude, the aircraft followed gravity until the pilot regained consciousness at ~10,000ft. The dive overspeeded the engine (awesome oil streaks!), and blew many, many rivets on pullout. I thought about this scheme, but I thought it would look just too garish and invite disbelief. :P Even the few P51s that came up here varied a lot in markings, much to my surprise. All I know is that they look better than the garish, brass-band markings supplied by GWS... |
