What John said. The absolute best thing to do when you see someone behaving like an idiot is to just let Jason know. Don't reply to the idiot. Most likely, that is what they are looking for. Attention.

And, as a reminder, to report a post to Jason, just click on the little triangle with the exclamation point icon below the posters name over on the left. It's easy, it's quick, and you're not feeding the idiot.

That might stop some of the threads from people in other countries trying to sell us everything except the kitchen sink

Hey, a forum is a place to get help also - and like I said, just to hang out, share ideas, tell others what you are working on, and to talk about events, etc.

I have personally met I bet a hundred guys over the years from here, and made some great friends. You know, it should be like a big club. Thats what I think anyhow...

Re: Why are many of the new members....

It seems to be the way this whole hobby is going. The newer people getting involved do not understand the whole "group" function of the hobby (sorry, I'll correct that, SOME of the newer people getting involved).
I have been in this hobby for 30 years and I have never seen so many self absorbed, in it for me, I deserve the best deal and don't owe anyone anything bullcrap as I have seen in the past 3 or so years.
I think the ARF industry has turned out hobby in to much of an instant gratification hobby. Andrew's price for his Sukhoi was WAY out of line, it should have been higher!!!!! The people who want to see things run and operate first do have some justification in their want, BUT, it is a little unrealistic to have somebody do that just in case you buy the airplane. Try that on ebay, win the auction and then start giving people ultimatums. Further to that, what if that person is in my position (and many others I'm sure). I have no way to make a video to prove that things work, I don't have a video camera and I'm not going to go out of my way to try to find somebody who can make a movie for me.
If the tables were turned, and Mr 7 posts was trying to sell something and nobody knew who he was it would be much more expected for a buyer to be skeptical, but when it's a modeler who has been around forever, and is well respected in the community, give me a break. I would have issue with letting the guy have the plane for a week and if he wasn't happy give him his money back as well, it takes nothing to crash a plane, run an engine lean, and then make claims that it was a pre-existing problem, and want their money back.

There is little faith left in mankind, and in many cases with very good reason, but I like to think that in a community like this, the good guys will remain the good guys.

I have had a great time flying RC jets. While jets may be high end, it levels the playing field. In the 30 years I have been in RC modeling, I haven't been involved with any other group of people who are just all friends. There is very little BS in the community. It is like the funfly's and clubs were back in the 80's. Everyone interested in what everyone else has, everyone willing to help. I know that exists in other aspects of the hobby still today, but not like it used to. It's unfortunate that the Pattern guys stick with pattern guys, IMAC with IMAC, 3D with 3D, heli with heli, scale with scale etc. It didn't use to be so broken up like that.

But unfortunately, what I am seeing more and more today is individuals out for themselves. I went to a few different clubs this year, rarely was I made to feel welcome, heck, at a couple of them I didn't even feel like people were happy or even indifferent to me being there, a couple times I felt like I was unwelcome. God forbid you go start talking to somebody.
The hobby has changed greatly, some for the better, some for the worse.
I certainly don't sell stuff online as often as I used to, I hold out for quite a while first. I don't know why it is, but the most difficult sales I've ever had have been within Canada as well. 90% of the time I can sell faster and for more money to the USA, probably just the larger market, but I don't get the same lowball offers either. Maybe it's coincidence, maybe it's the feeling that Canadian's need to stick together, therefore they deserve a better deal, I really don't know.
Sad part is, there are times that a person can't even ask a legitimate question about a price without people jumping all over them.
Anyway, Andrew, the plane is a hell of a deal. It's not my bag, but if it was, or even if I wanted to give that style of flying a try I'd be all over it. You are one guy that I wouldn't hesitate to buy from!

On another note, did you find me a good picture of Teak? I still want to do that shirt for you my friend, just haven't got the picture you wanted yet

What ever happened to joining a forum to become a quality member, willing to share advice, talk about events and projects, help newcomers and learn from the experienced guys?

I see some pretty aggressive, demeaning and just plain rude behaviour on here at times, and its generally newer members who have absolutely no interest in being here than to use the buy/sell forum.

Sometimes I do a search on posts when I see people stirring up trouble - and 99% of the time they have NO POSTS other than in the want ads!

The Canadian guitar forum I am also a long time member of has a policy that members much have a certain amount of posts (in general forums) before they are allowed to use the buy/sell forum. Keeps the riff raff in line, and actually encourages newbies to contribute to the good of the site, or stay away.

Yeah, I am ranting. Guess sometimes I just miss the old days...

Re: Why are many of the new members....

Andrew: Randy's advice above is, in my opinion, the best. You state we should act like members of "one big club" and you are correct. I managed a private golf club for 30 years. I lasted that long because: "I never let the 5 percenters get me down". In other words, I knew that 5% of the members could never be pleased. Therefore I was determined that their criticisms or comments would never affect my performance. When I retired, the Club was rated #1 in Canada. Cheers. . . John Mickle MAAC @ 24781

Re: Why are many of the new members....

I, for one, could not get along without this forum. I have lerned so much from so many. I only met Andrew once, at BoQA Jet Rally at Mountainview and while I only spent minutes in his company, I consider him a friend. John Davidson in Alberta, Gary Maker and others likewise; and if it had not been for RCC, I would never have made the connection and I would be poorer for it. It's the old 95:5 situation: 5% of the people create 95% of the problems. I've seen it in social groups, in volunteer organizations and in business. Thank goodness for the 95% who are real human beings and really are trying to get along and make things better.

I just hope I am included in the 95%

Re: Why are many of the new members....

Thank you LGM Guitars for not putting all us junior members in the same class!

As a junior member of R/C Canada myself I could not believe the disrespect shown to Andrew and the total lack of trust by another junior member. But please don’t believe that all junior members are so “high on them self”.

I am on R/C Canada very often but mostly to read and learn from the senior members. And when I do post a question I have always had a fast reply. I sometimes feel that I am asking a very dumb question to you senior gent’s but I have never received a smarta$$ reply which is greatly appreciated.

How about a junior member with something to buy or sell to ask a senior member to 2nd it? Most junior member have a mentor to help (or should have) that will stand up for junior members trustworthiness if they believe in that member.
