Gyros for planes

I come from the world of helicopters and have heard that some guys are using gyros on their aircraft?

I have an aeroworks 100cc yak 55m I just built, dle 111, and am wondering how it would function with a 3 axis gyro for the rudder, pitch, and aileron.

Or do normally people just run it on one control surface? If so which one and why. Rudder?

I put one in my FPV skywalker. What a difference in performance once that thing was installed. Playing back my videos before/after, you can really see the difference when you are close to the ground- IE coming in for a landing. Before I was wobbling all over the place due to wind gusts, and after its just rock-steady all the way down 'till touchdown.

Re: Gyros for planes

If you are using it to learn to fly they can help instill confidence or if you want to use them for FPV they can be great but if you fly with them all the time they can quickly become a crutch. Someone I know put them in all his planes and was quick to point out how good he was flying but when he went back to fly something without guess what crunch....

Prior to the aircraft 3 axis gyros, I knew some people who wired 3 GY401's into their planes, one for each axis. Worked great!

Those that use less than 3, they use it on the function that needs it the most.
Rudder for long aspect ratio aircraft that have lots of adverse yaw, or on the nose gear steering (rudder on some, dedicated nose-gear servo on others) to help improve ground taxiing - the jet guys do this a lot)

Others need help with roll stability and maybe only put it on ailerons.

Today's modern flight stabilizers for aircraft come in 2 axis and 3 axis. They work very well. There is some argument that the stabilizers lessen the pilots skill level by doing the flying for him. But on the other hand, if you want smooth flights (ie FPV or APV) this is a nice little feature to have.
