What covering is this??

Hi guys,

I would like to I.D. some covering I have. I picked it up as part of an estate lot at an auction several years ago, and have just started using it on a plane I am covering. I have most of a roll of a dark blue (Navy? Royal?) and a red. There is nothing on it to identify its brand. It feels very stiff and heavy at first, then when you peel off the white backing paper, it feels much like MonoKote. It shrinks and stretches beautifully, forms around curves like dream, and sticks down like crazy.

It is unlike anything else in my stock, what with the white backing paper instead of clear plastic film. I will have used it all up fairly soon, but if I knew what brand it is I would definitely look for more of it.

Re: What covering is this??

Sounds like old stock Dave, if it's that good there's no way it is current
I think I had some and still might but will have to look.

HI Dave The only covering that I have used with a white backing paper was the old Goldberg Ultracote Plus(before Hanger 9 took it over) You don't mention if the covering is sticky when you remove the backing. Thats why they called it Plus. If it is then I think that's what it is. I wish they still made it because I really liked it.You could draw your design on the backing paper the cut it out Pretty sure it was discontinued maybe around 15 years ago. Let me know if it is sticky.

Paul

By the way I do not have any

Re: What covering is this??

Dave, if not adhesive backed it may be Oracover (same product as the old Ultracote). Oracover used to have white paper between the layers in the roll.

Re: What covering is this??

It's Ultracote or Oracover (same thing). Those are the only ones that use a paper backing.

Re: What covering is this??

Well, it doesn't feel sticky when the paper is peeled off, and the side of the paper next to the covering is really slick. I have found you really have to abuse it to blow a hole in it with the heat gun, unlike some MonoKote I am using on the same project. I blew a hole in the part I was pulling on quite easily.

Re: What covering is this??

Is there any printing on the paper backing? Oracover or Ultracote has the Oracover name on the side edge along with the colour stated in German. It is a dot-matrix style of type.

Not a darned thing that I can see. That's why I am so puzzled.

Re: What covering is this??

Hi Dave:

Well you got me curious and I had to dig through my pile of Ultracote. Some of it has the printing on the paper and some doesn't. Go figure.
If it helps the Ultracote or Oracover rolls all have a width of 23 5/8" or 60cm.
BTW I have mentioned it in other threads that I use Ultracote and always recommend it to others.

Chris
