OK let's have your vote and hear why or why not.

I have a 33% Yak 54 ARC that comes with ARF Giant Scale Hinges but am not quite sure I want to use them. Everything is already slotted for flat hinges and since it is an ARC I can pin them before the covering is done so I will sticck with flatt hinges over the Robart Hinge Point unless you can convince me otherwise.

Please complete the Poll as well as commenting.

Thanx in advance for everyones input.

None of the above... I use these hinges from Radio South in all my GS airplanes. I've never had one fail!

Easy to install and very light.

Mike,

A CA hinge, even on your 52% Extra? Do you pin them at all?

DuBro 1/4 scale Hinges

Hi Jim:

I like to use the DuBro 1/4 scale hinges with the brass cotter pin. What I do is remove the cotter pin and replace it with .047 music wire, and run the same piece of music wire through all the hinges on the control surface.

This does 2 things.

1. It insures that all your hinges are level and are not binding. Once you are sure there is no binding, you can now pin your hinges to the surfaces before covering them.

2. The solid music wire helps to fill in any hinge gap you might have.

If you put a 90 degree bend in the outboard end of the wire, you can cut a slot in your wing/stab/rudder tip to hold the bend and you can either glue the bend in or cover it with your covering material.

If you need to make repairs or adjustments to any control surface, slit your covering where the bend is and you can now remove the wire, making your control surfaces removeable.

Try it, you might like it! That's the way I did my Purple Extra 300.

Regards,

Dennis

Yup, "all my planes". A CA hinge does not need pining. I put 3 drops of thin CA on each end of the hinge, and on both sides, for a total of 12 drops. A small drilled hole in the centre of the slot allows the glue to wick in nicely, and the bond becomes permanent.
