Irvine .61 2 Stroke
Didn't know if I should have put this here or in the Antique Engine section. Anyway, I found a NIB .61 and mounted it in a kit built Ultra Sport 60. Finally got the nerve up today to maiden her. Flew well actually with minor trimming.
About 4 minutes into the maiden I heard the engine make that goofy sound that they do when the muffler comes loose. It quit, but the dead-stick landing came off without any issues. I used the exhaust bolts the previous owner had supplied, and did use locktite on them. I believe the bolts supplied were the wrong ones. My question is, are Irvine engines English or Trudeu (metric)? Some designer that worked on the development of this engine must have had really tiny fingers or way more tools than I own, what a stupid way to mount a muffler! Would provide pictures but our daughter borrowed our camera for her holiday. |

Re: Irvine .61 2 Stroke
I had an Irvine Q.72 and I am pretty sure they were M4

Re: Irvine .61 2 Stroke
Do the muffler bolts on your .61 go through the muffler and thread into the engine block? My Q.72 did and they were 4mm I am sure. The Irvine I believe is made in England so would be metric.

Re: Irvine .61 2 Stroke
Did a quick google search and the prop nut is 5/16
Look through here and see what you can find. http://www.justengines.co.uk/acatalo...t_Systems.html

Re: Irvine .61 2 Stroke
BTDT Your and my engines aren't there, but the mystery continues. The prop retaining nut is in inches, all other measurements appear to be metric.
Pretty confident this muffler isn't coming off again. I wanted somethin' unique, ha, I got what I wished for! |

Re: Irvine .61 2 Stroke
Yeah, wierd......Mixing standard and metric...I remember when cars did that. It was a royal PITA.

Re: Irvine .61 2 Stroke
LOL I still have a "13 Letter $hit Spreader" (International) Eagle Highway tractor. Every bolt on the old girl is standard except the Wheel bolts. (Bud Rims). Had a Ford 1/2 ton that was Metric on one side and not on the other....
Nothing an Engineer does surprises me! |
