You have a nice flying site guys! Must have been early in Spring still; you guys all wrapped up, but lovely sunset shots.
One last question Mervin, what length would you estimate, do you have the tow line?
Hey, I've just noticed - your tug plane seems to be Electric!

Re: Budget Glider Towing

Thanks Russ! Lends a lot more credence to my rambling!

We had planned to spend the whole afternoon towing but a cold front moved in with high winds & rain so only got in two tows just before dark. So the caped Avenger costume isn't essential to the operation, just a creacher comfort!

Note the string & fence shot! Way quicker stops than a drag chute!

60 or 70 feet. Too short makes things much more tricky on the tow!

Actually it was just last Monday evening!

Re: Budget Glider Towing

Spitball - Merv's Senorita is definitely an electric! Works darned fine and pretty impressive power. Sure puts the electric poo poo'ers in their place pretty promptly too! As far as the flying site goes, it's AWESOME. Nice (not perfect) runway, float flying 100 yds to the south. Decent clubhouse, no tree's to whack just a 3 1/2' fence for the occasional moment of humility. Biggest plus is there's decent lift according to Mr. Dale Hunter for the glider nuts not that far away. Makes it hard to justify rogue flying around here, especially with our landing fees

8* Celcius, NW wind @ 20 kM/h and no jacket. It isn't supposed to be that cold on the 16 of August is it?

It's called "dedication" in spite of adverse conditions John! Anyway, that's about how you feel after an afternoon of successful towing. You leave the field with a huge poop-eating grin!!

Yes it is adequately powered. Something I should mention is that the 2 to 3meter gliders (contrary to popular belief) take very little power to tow!

Remember when we used to use a power pod on them with a Cox .049? So - if your plane has enough power to fly plus about an ".049" extra - you're in the glider towing business!

If you go back to my second post, you will see the engine sizes we have used successfully. My Saito 30 4 stroke handled the 2.5 meter Olympic II with authority!

And we are at 2400 feet here! For you guys down closer to sea level - it will be a cake walk!
