DC Power Source

I have been charging my Lipo's from a 12 volt car battery, but was wondering if you more experienced guys would recommend the purchase of a 12 volt DC power source instead? Can anybody offer advice on where to buy, other than ordering from overseas. I only have a small car battery to charge with and now that I have larger Lipo packs it doesn't take long to run down. Is there a problem running my charger to the Lipo's while the car battery is being charged? I can't help but think a DC power source is the way to go for the long term. Any comments appreciated. Thank You...

Re: DC Power Source

A 12 to 15 volt power supply would be fine instead of a car battery. If you are charging your LiPo at 3 amps, you would need at least a 75 watt or 5 amp power supply. Depending on the efficiency of the power supply, I would recommend purchasing a power supply about 10 amps or 150 watts.

You could check out Active Electronics or Electrosonic on Gordon Baker Road, off Victoria Park and south of Steeles. There is also Sayal Electronics on Victoria Park across the street from Active and Electrosonic.

You could also check out Princess Auto on Dixie Road in Mississauga.

I use a BK Precision Power Supply... http://www.bkprecision.com/products/...er-supply.html

I could charge 3 LiPo batteries at 3 amps with lots to spare!

Others may want to chime in with their own opinions and suggestions...

Thanks,

Gordon

Re: DC Power Source

This was discussed here:
https://www.rccanada.ca/rccforum/showthread.php?t=104046

I looked up the specs on this power supply and it should work great. Its only 22 bucks!!

I told my brother and he went and got one too. This is the link to the charger from the original poster:

The adapter has the following specs:
Input 100--240V, 50-60Hz (worldwide use)
Output is 12V 6A, 72 Watts

I am not very good with the electrical stuff and wanted to hear the opinion of those who is more familiar with the electronics/electricity if this set up would work.

Thank you in advance.

Re: DC Power Source

Here are a couple of options:

This one is designed for smaller chargers - can put out 5Amps.

http://www.thunderboltrc.com/index.p...roducts_id=835

This one is designed for larger chargers (can actually run 2 chargers at once) - can put out 34Amps.

Thanks,

Grizak

Re: DC Power Source

Thanks to all you guys. I see one advertised in the electronics for sale area and it puts out 10 amps. I'll try for that one and then I can go to some of the places you chaps have suggested. Thanks a lot......

You have to consider how "big" your packs are. To charge my 10S (37v)packs at 5 amps I need to get a power supply that will put out 15 amps at 12 volts, what you suggest above wouldn't work. It's not just amps you have to consider, you also need to think about pack voltage unless you just have small packs.

Re: DC Power Source

Another option, if high current output is needed; a RV converter. I picked a new one up on EEEEKBay a year or so ago for $80.00 in my hand It puts out 55amps max, and has an internal cooling fan that is temp/load controlled. On the other hand, a computer power supply is an easy conversion and works fine.

Re: DC Power Source

Thanks again fellows. Terry, I don't see myself ever having 10 cell packs. The set up I am going to use is 6 cells and I will use two 3 cell packs in series, so, I may not need the same capacity that you require.
