Balancing Lipos

I have two light max 5000 mah lipos 5 cell 18.5 volts
I have been charging them with a Venom charger but it seems the cells are not evenly matched.
What is the best way to even them out so each cell is equal?
Can this be done?
Thanks for the help

Thumbs up Re: Balancing Lipos

i'm not familliar with the venom charger but you should be chaging and balancing your batteries most of the time . so if your charger does not have a balancer with it you'll need one . the other alternative is to get another charger.
i'm using an accucel 6 from hobbyking an it works great an was dirt cheap.
if you charge without balancing your cells will not last as long an may crap out on ya sooner than later. hope that helps ya

Re: Balancing Lipos

If you are using a charger with a balancer, then it should be close.

Can you provide the charger model?

What is the individual cell voltage?

Re: Balancing Lipos

here's a link to the charger i'm using
it's good up to 6s packs ,and has worked great for me.

http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/s...idProduct=7028

just copy and paste this in google .

all cells should max out at 4.2volts per cell when fully charged.
also know that that you should never drain em down to far either.
u try not to bring em down no more than 3.7volts per cell.
so a charged 5s pack should be at 4.2volts x 5
an when done should be 3.7volts x 5
another example is a 3s pack puts out 12.6 volts charged . that is 3 x 4.2 volts
i hope you're getting the idea.

Re: Balancing Lipos

are you hooking up the venom correctly the ones i found online look similar to the HK one . If thats the case you need to hook up the main black and red ( big wires) and plug in the small balancing plug as well . I have 1 battery with a balancing plug that is different than my charger so in this case you would need to either make buy an adapter or change out the plug

Re: Balancing Lipos

i just had a look at the venom charger and it looks like Chris may be on to something. meaning that you need to plug in the main power as well as the balancing plug to the charger and then you should be able to charge an balance.

Re: Balancing Lipos

Same goes with my Hyperion EOS charger, you need to plug in both the balancing lead and the red/black charge leads.

I assume he has done this. Let's see what he reports back with.

If it's the FlightMax lipos, I can understand some imbalance. I'm sure they are not made to the same tolerances as a Hyperion or Thunderpower pack.

When using your charger, you should be charging in BALANCE MODE

The venom chargers I looked up all look like the standard B6 Charger (same as X-charger or the Turnigy charger, etc...) On these chargers, the default charge mode DOES NOT BALANCE THE CELLS. It only monitors the cells for large voltage difference and will shut down the charge if it detects a large imbalance. You need to set up the charger for balance mode.

When you select the Lipo charge setting on the charger, there are several sub-menu's that change the charge mode.

After you select the battery type (Lipo), press the > arrow button to scroll through the different charge modes. Find the BALANCE mode.

Then plug in your battery as per usual (power leads AND balance leads hooked up.) And then charge. The balance mode will charge the low battery first at a low rate until they are all balanced, and then charge them all at the high rate. IF there is a large imbalance, it takes quite a while to bring the low battery(s) up (usually overnight for a grossly off balance pack)

Once you get the backs balanced up, subsequent charges in balance mode only take a few minutes longer than the normal charge mode but you get the benefit of keeping the batteries balanced. (PS- I ALWAYS charge my packs in balance mode regardless- I find the balance feature provides an extra margin of safety- If you hook anything up wrong or select the wrong cells, it stops the charge cycle right away)
