Small models

Doesn't anyone fly small models off water? I have always built and flown smaller models, with very few exceptions. Except for a reference or two to Beavers on floats etc., no one seems to build flying boats- SMALL ones.

Just to draw you guys out of the woodwork, here is my latest: it started out as a semiscale Sea Otter, but things got out of control so I have to call it the She Oughter (fly, that is). 24" span, 300-size electric, not quite finished (no tip floats, etc). I will post a report once it has been tested, when the lakes aren't so hard!

That looks cool! You shouldn't need a lot of water to fly from either, just a small pond, or a damp sponge maybe?

Should fly nicely.

Floaters

Thanks, guys. The proff, as they say...

The Sea Otter was a follow-up to the Walrus, straight wings, front-facing engine. They didn't build near as many as they did the Walrus, as biplanes were quickly going out of fashion, even with many distinct advantages.

One thing I plan to experiment with is the old NACA long-planing hull; I will use a GWS BN2 Islander for this, and keep you posted. Looking through my old magazines, the NACA hull was the choice for many very successful models: my buddy had a 6' Sea Cat (Berkeley kit) that lifted off very nicely on a 15 diesel. Reinventing the wheel?
