Inportance of a smooth NGV

Though I'd give Ed a rest, I definitely ask too many questions LOL! For any of the turbine builders out there, how finicky are you about your NGV? I'm working on a Simjet Sonic 120, so the NGV is already worked over a bit. The instructions suggests shaping the leading and trailing edges. I've been smoothing the sand cast surface of each blade but was wondering how important it really is. Any comments?

PS It sure is fun playing with all these parts!

Shaun,
I am not sure how much it will help but the Artes manual has them in the diagram in the shape of a clark Y airfoil. Flat bottom sharp leading and trailing edge. I don't believe it would hurt this way and it would probably give better airflow with less turbulance. As far as the pebbling on the blades I don't think it would help to smooth them out. I always found as a kid when on hydroplanes the boat ran quicker on a ripple then being smooth.
Hope this helps since I am new at this part and welcome any comments about any topic on turbines. You never get to old to learn more but it is getting rough at my age remembering.

Oops

The blades are all smooth now! I hope I didn't mess it up already LOL.

You are looking at some pretty high velocity, high energy air passing through a very restrictive opening (the NGV). My thought that any unneccessary flow resisistence in this area would increase temps and decrease efficiency of the turbine......

I left the NGV on my homebuilt as finished (very fine investment cast finish) and havent read anything of anything to gain. I guess as long as you are not removing too much material it cant hurt. Only way to know for sure is run it before and after and check the rpm/temp/thrust curves.
