Re: New Spektrum DX18

I was a JR guy back when Circus Circus was handling them, than I got out of the hobby for a few years and upon re-entry soon discovered my Century V11 was not filling my needs so I went DX7 and now DX8 for over a year and love the Telemetry and see we have more sensors coming. Gotta like this stuff eh.
RAMJET ? as a current JR fllyer do the JR Radios offer Telemetry like Spektrum or if not will JR be upgradeable to Telemetry?

Hi Brian ,I think the telemetry is a cool gadget but really not much needed on a top line radio, most guys flying very expensive planes would consider the extra gadgets pointless, The way I see it the more things going on the more chance for something to go wrong.why do I need gauges on a airplane I have never needed them before.Even so when the spektrum 18 comes out, I am sure I will get one to mess with.

Re: New Spektrum DX18

Very true Roger, it is a gadget that I never use in flight other than Airspeed to keep my big Gee Bees in scale hopefully. What I do like is that after a flight I can go to my Min Max screen and see what happened in the way of Altitude, Engine Temp and RPM's. Also handy to check on board batteries before flight without using my plug in tester.
DX18 is on My list too for the added programing, sequencing and servo speed.

Re: New Spektrum DX18

This technology is interesting but hope JR waits until the bugs are worked out before using it .I see it as more of a diagnostic tool to be used in a new plane then removed after setup but to this point I have never had a problem that could not be solved without it, so in fact it's for now just another cool risk factor.

"Cool" is the word.
"Risk" is what I take every time I pull out of My driveway and head to the field.

Re: New Spektrum DX18

Telemetry is just another feature, no more no less. Someone always says "I don't really need it, it just does what I can already do more easily" but that's what all our advances are based on. For instance, look at cars, do I need a feasture that automatically turns on my headlights based on the light level outside? Not really, I only need to turn one dial but.... I also know I'll never be one of those guys driving around without my lights on...

All "conviniences" can turn into things we start to take for granted and miss when they aren't there.

The best feature of telemetry that I like is the voltage reading, always lets me know if I have a fully charged battery in there before flight.

Re: New Spektrum DX18

You have to manage risk, when your plane is worth $10,000 plus you think long and hard about how much risk that extra stuff adds . most guys with 12 or 18 channel radios have a lot on the line ,and don't need extra risk factors. That's why I figure JR will only use this technology after it proves it's self.I find a dx18 a strange offering ,a radio targeted at the top radios in a second line wrapper. I am not knocking spektrum I think one day soon, after a couple of revisions of this radio and a few years of good service they could be mixing it up with the big boys, but I don't see many of the guys with the big buck planes jumping ship just yet ,and few others could make use of this radio,so who is going to use it and for what ,I want one but to be honest I don't know what I would use it for .

Re: New Spektrum DX18

I agree Roger extra toy's can create more problems.Even though i am a large spektrum fan i am a believer in a two to three year wait after they come out with a new product, before i make a purchase. When i purchased my DX7 i waited two years,as they did have a few bugs to work out.And as i look at the DX18 well it is some swwweeeeet looking tx.
