I'm running the stock metal mugen gear... I can't see why you would want plastic over metal personally?

Plastic spur gears have the benefits of being quieter and also less rotating mass.

I ran the same plastic (Kyosho) spur gear on my eRC8 for a whole season with no visible wear.

Using a 4s (14.8v) battery it depends on which motor I'm using:
46T Spur + 18T Pinion + 2200kv motor = 39mph top speed
46T Spur + 19T Pinion + 2050kv motor = 39mph top speed
46T Spur + 22T Pinion + 1800kv motor = 39mph top speed
This link has a great tool for getting your gearing close to the ideal top speed (about 39 mph for track use).

The RC8 buggy (4.3:1) differentials have the same gear ratio as most truggy's (3.3:1) so that is why the pinion on the RC8 buggy is larger than most other manufacturer's buggies.

With the 1800 or 2050 kv motor you can make 15 mins with a 5000 mAh pack.
But, I think the most popular race format will be 10 min mains (Triple A at large events)
