Alcohol in gas

I am still looking at a 20cc to 26cc gas engine. Ontario has legislated that auto fuel must contain 5% alcohol. Shell puts 10% in their regular gas and none in their premium. These engines are pretty low tech and were originally designed to run on anything. Has anyone experimented with gas from different gas station? Sunoco has had alcohol in it for years. The ultra-light guys have to be very careful where they buy their gas. The gas-bars seem to have the worst gas, even their premium has crap mixed in with it. A friend of mine spilled some premium from one of these gas-bars on his windshield and it melted the plastic snow machine windshield. What is the best mixture of oil to use? I have found that the Rotax oils from the local Skidoo dealer are top notch.

I very nearly became confused reading your post, as it jumps from 20cc, to auto fuel, to ultra-lite, etc.!!!!

However, if I'm not mistaken, I believe your intention is to ask which fuel to use for a small engine.

My input is to say; I use the fuel with the highest octane level that I can buy, which is ESSO Premium in my case, and mix Sthil 2-cycle engine oil.
To date, I've had no problems with my small, 2-cycle engines.

ethanol, not alcohol. And this is discussed in another thread.

https://www.rccanada.ca/bb/viewtopic.php?t=39222

as for octane, when I did my research, it was kind of a mixed "87" or "93". I finally decided on an opinion I liked and stuck with it:

whatever is available. 87 won't hurt. 93 gives you warm fuzzies? go for it.

As for oil, that's one I won't touch. Several threads down south and they're all over the map other than "2 cycle air cooled engine oil".

I've also come across a guy that (successfully so he claims) uses 15 year old gas stored in a big tank in his back yard for all his small gassers. No issues with that old stuff for him.

Uh huh.

Pays yer money. Takes yer chances.

Just for the record ethanol IS alcohol, one of many in the family. Ethyl alcohol (or grain alcohol) to be precise, is the same stuff you've been consuming over the holidays.

Methanol aka Methyl alcohol aka wood alcohol will make you blind or dead if consumed and Isopropanol aka isopropyl alcohol aka 2-propanol aka rubbing alcohol is used diluted for giving back rubs amongst other things.

That's like saying I'm putting oil in my tank so my car engine will run.

Ya, gasoline is refined oil. Doesn't make it the right word though.
