Inhibiting Engines for Winter storage

While we still have some flying season left here in eastern Canada, in preparation, I'm doing a little reading about how to prepare your glo engines for winter storage. I see a lot of folks are using Marvel Air Tool Oil. In fact my Saito engine manuels all specify using it for long term storage of engines. The problem is I cannot seem to locate that brand here. Would any brand of air tool oil be ok to use?

Thanks in advance,

Gary A

Roy i use Marvel Mystery oil because i have access to it ,but you can use transmission oil as well.For winter storage i give each engine a good dose of oil.I flip the engine over about three to four times then i hold the plane nose up to get the oil into the back bearing then nose down to get oil into the front bearing.

Re: Inhibiting Engines for Winter storage

I mix half Marvel Mystery Oil and half automatic transmission oil!
A mixed litre lasted me over three seasons.

Re: Inhibiting Engines for Winter storage

I have had a bunch of engines in storage for a long time - have not flown in almost 3 years, some engines have sat for over 10.

I am planning to get out flying again this year, and am getting all of my engines in shape to do it.

I had a OS 91 FS Surpass with no compression, I tried everything I was told to do, nothing worked. Finally I "cooked" it in anti-freeze - in an old crock pot.

The engine came out of the anti freeze looking like it just came out of it's orginal box. First time I tried to start it, it jumped to life. After that success, I did the same with 8 others with the same results. A 30 year old OS MAX 46 looks like it is brand new, full of compression and runs better than I ever remember it. It was crusted in crap and looked aweful, now it is prestine.

To store them for the rest of the off-season, I have given every engine a good dose of air tool oil all over. I have never been great with winter storage of the engines, I will get better now, but at least I know that the engines can be brought back to life with a little time and love.

Manks;

THis is a tried and true method - HOWEVER ...

Please beware that the carbon and crud comes off in chunks sometimes this material can plug the fuel ports and cause all sorts of problems.

Bottom line; it works, but be sure to clean out the carburator and fuel ports.
